Gentlemen, I have a Sweet Sixteen in transit and MEC 16 gauge dies in transit. I need to order some hulls and wads, and am thinking of buying Cheddite hulls and Claybuster WAA16 (CB0100B) wads, as I am thinking I'll mostly load 1 1/8 ounce loads for bird hunting. Does this make good sense? I see a lot of talk about the DR wad, but it is for reduced loads that may not even function in an Auto 5. Thanks for any guidance -- and if you have a powder you favor for the Cheddite hull and CB wad, feel free to share. |

I bought a flat of 16 gauge Remington shells to start my hull collection for reloading. I use the Claybuster wads to reload 1 oz shells, and they cycle my A-5s. I have used Herco, Green Dot, Unique, and am currently using Universal Clays. |

I get my supply of Cheddite hulls from inexpensive Herter's ammo from Cabela's. Lately they've had quite a variety of loads, and when they're on sale I think they're cheaper than my reloads. |

I think you are on the right path. I like the waa and the Z-16 both using Longshot which is available. the ched hull is good and available as a new primed hull from various scources .I like using new hulls for field loads. |

A straightwall hull-Federal,Cheddite-will work better w/a 1 1/8 oz load.Unique or Herco are good choices. |

The Ched hull with the waa wad and longshot is not a good choice. I been there and had bad powder migration Issues . That combo with a large flaked powder will work fine . If I where going to load 1 1/8 oz with that Hull wad combo I would use 800x , but it doesn't meter well , so when I load 800x I weigh all my powder drops . Depending on how many you are going need in a season it's not a big deal for me.
If I was going to load Longshot with the waa wad , I would get a hold of some Remington hulls . |

For hunting load I use ched hulls, CB waa16 clone wad and 800x with a 1 1/8 shot charge. Data is in the spreadsheets. It crimps nicely and drops decoying birds just fine. |

I too was thinking of using WinAA 16ga. wads in the ched hull. It felt fairly loose, so I cut the pedels off the wad and just put the wad base in the hull. The wad base was very loose in the bottom of the hull. I would suspect there would/could be a lot of powder migration.
Not scientific, but I choose to use the BP (SG16, Z16) wads with the ched hulls instead. I use my WinAA and Rem SP16 wads for my WinCF hulls exclusively.
I stick with Unique powder fairly exclusively for lead.
My two cents.

I finally got around to chronograph a 7/8 load I have been shooting skeet with.
The load is 16 herters cheedite hull
Fioochi primer
20.9 grains of universal powder
DR wad ( yea got them restocked)
7/8 oz of 8 shot
Average of 5 shots 1140 fps.
I just shot this load in my Sweet 16 no problems.
Myself I see no reason to shoot a 1 1/8 oz load out of a 16 gauge.
I would shoot a 12 if I wanted that large of a load.
Shot allot of birds with 1 oz of shot.
Just my opinion . |

All sweet 16 may not cycle a 7/8 oz load.
But, mine does. With a little oit on the mag tube.
Don't count out your sweet not cycling 7/8 oz loads.
You can load 7/8 oz in a ched hull using the DR 16.
And add a 16 gauge pump in the future and have fun with 3/4 oz loads.
And I also see no reason to shoot 1 1/8 oz loads in a 16. |

Neither Win AA16's nor their Claybuster clones are a good recommendation for hulls such as Cheddite, Winchester Cheddite, Fiocchi, Herters, etc. Powder migration can be a problem because those wads are not made to fit those hulls. yes, you can make them work with large flake powder, but why. There is a better choice: Use the Gualandi wads -- they're made for those hulls. Ballistic Products Inc. sells them as SG16 or SG16S. Precision Reloading sells them as TUWG2116 or TUWG1816. B&P wads also are made for those hulls. At Ballistic Products Inc. they are called Z16 or Field Commander, and at Precision they are TUWZ2M16GA.
For 1 1/8 oz. in a 70mm (2 3/4 inch) Cheddite hull, use 22 grains of Longshot or 25 grains of HS-6 and either a Cheddite or Winchester 209 (Ched's will fit tighter -- best for automatics). Use one of the three wads above. They'll be around 1200 fps. Those loads are from the Low Pressure Group spreadsheet (join and get it). |

There are good and not-so-good combinations of hulls and wads, with many bytes and electrons expended on the topic here, and much valuable advice dispensed and experience shared.
I aver that it can be boiled down into one general rule: American wads for American hulls, and European wads for European hulls.

Really appreciate all the guidance, fellas. Tempted to try some DR16s, too, in case the loads will cycle the Auto 5. |

Where do you guys buy your wads? I was just ready to order a bag of DR16s and a bag of Guilandis from Precision Reloading, and the $25 order was going to cost $17 to ship. Not on my watch. |
