I hefted the one at Pheasant Fest yesterday also. Seemed like a nice light gun. No genuine Sweet 16 but certainly looked and felt good.
I told the guys at the booth that it was a hot topic on 16ga.com. They looked at me in surprise. "There is one? they asked." Now they know. |

I watched. Is that the wretched Browning plastic finish on the gun?

The rep at the Browning ammo booth didn't know specifics about the 16ga loadings, their catalog didn't even list it as it was a last-minute addition, but he guessed it would have 1oz or 1 1/4oz of shot. Skipped right over 1 1/8oz, which is on the website as their Xtra Distance load. With their 1oz/1165fps round they'll pretty much duplicate other offerings, I will hope for wide distribution and competitive pricing. |

If the gun weighs under 6 lbs as advertised it will not be pleasant to shoot all afternoon with current commercial loadings. One ounce loads will punish you similar to a 1 1/8 load in a 6.5 lb gun. This will make it a hunting gun only, unsuitable for a day of Trap, or SC's.
Unless, of course, they load some 7/8. The currently available 7/8 loadings are too expensive for me to use for practice or on the SC range. (RST, Polywad). But the Browning website only lists a 1oz offering in 16 gauge at the moment. That is the most common commercial 16 gauge offering and I doubt it will be competitive.
Without a 7/8 load at a price competitive with current 1oz offerings, I won't be in the market for a new "Sweet". |

Actual reported weight of a test gun was in the 6-1/4 lb. neighborhood -- comfortable for a moderate velocity 1 oz. load.
Pretty easy to add a few ounces of weight to a repeating shotgun in places that don't wreck handling characteristics.

If 6 1/4 pounds is correct that's 3oz heavier than a BUL in 12 gauge that lists at 6 lbs 1 oz |

I had a 12 gauge BUL and it weighed 6 lbs. 2 0z. if the SW16 weighs 6 1/4 lbs. that's only 2 oz more and you get real wood and a metal rib vs. fake wood grain and a plastic rib. Advantage SW16. |

I just did a search for 7/8 loads on ammoseek.com and came away with 58 offers of 7/8 oz loads in 12 gauge shells, over 120 offers in 20 gauge shells and on the 16 zilch, zip, and nada.
With over 250 total 16 gauge offers, the only 7/8 oz loads available are slugs.
For 20 gauge even 3/4 oz loads are available.
So Sad.

They should probably not copy and paste data from a 20ga loading and then attempt to make all applicable changes! It'd be great to see them actually make it though, and kickstart a trend. |

Those Winchester prices make RST and Polywad offerings look inexpensive in comparison.
Winchester 0.875 oz $0.56/shot
Polywad 0.875 oz $0.40/shot
RST 0.875 oz $0.44/shot
Herter's 1 oz @ Cabela's $0.24/shot
RGL 1 oz $0.287/shot
I can easily go through 3 boxes in an afternoon of clay shooting. I sometimes do it twice a week. So the cost is not negligible, especially if my grand daughter shoots 2 boxes of RST like she did the other day.
Ridiculous pricing when you can get a 7/8 load in either 12 or 20 for $0.216/shot and $0.229/shot respectively.
I do apologize for hijacking the thread, it just drifted and I stayed with it. |
