I wondered how much longer I would be able to put in the miles hunting my favorite bird, desert quail. Now that I'm creeping up on 80 I no longer worry about it. Just do what I can while I can.
Went out on my birthday for a couple of hours of hunting in one of my favorite areas.
Someone has been working on this house out in the middle of nowhere for several years, not finished yet.
Two track to paradise
Beautiful day. 60*, slight breeze, not a cloud in the sky. Great day for a walk in the desert. That is a train off in the distance.
Not hearing any calls. Which way to go.
Very fresh empty, not a good sign. This area does get quite a bit of pressure. (I did pick up the empty).
Recent rains have promoted new green growth, good sign.
Barrel cactus plump with moisture.
Gotta be some birds out here somewhere.
Ouch, watch your shins.
Maybe the birds are over near the waterhole. Nope. only a couple of ducks. Didn't bring steel with me.
No birds, my feet hurt. I give up this time but I'll be back.
Happy 78th birthday.
A couple of birds would have been nice but given the alternative any time spent outdoors is a win. Gun is a 16ga Citori GRIII |

I hope that you have many more years chasing quail.
The pic of "Ouch, watch your shins" reminds me of the time I walked into a Spanish Bayonet cactus and spent the next half hour with my pants down pulling out the barbed tines. A year later the spines were still coming out of my body. Nasty stuff!!
I have male and female Mearns Quail mounted on a piece of wood as a reminder of an AZ quail hunt. |

Now that’s a pretty good birthday present. Thanks for the lovely pics of the desert in bloom. Enjoy the next one as much as you did this one.
Good Hunting,
Mike |

Happy Birthday Walt and thanks for the great photographs.
About 30 years ago my two sons were living in Mesa and enjoyed the hunting opportunities. They moved back east before I retired in 95 and could move out there. We continue to hunt in New England, mostly grouse and deer hunting in Maine.
