If your buying new hulls, I'd go Cheddite, ballistic puts them on for around $10.75 per 100 every so often along with $8.99 flat shipping. Get couple 100's and maximize shipping with some wads like sg16.

If used, I'd try buying federal hulls in the $.07 to $.10 range each.

Although I'm new to 16 ga, I've been reloading 12 ga & 20 ga for years and have often heard cheddite hulls referred to as "Euro trash". My own experience with them in 12 ga is that they make a fine load but the crimps are not durable and often start splitting after 2 reloads.

What makes cheddites so desirable in 16 ga? Is it relative to lack of other hulls comparable to AA's, Gold Medals or STS's?

Yes- IMO Cheddite are the best hull of what's available in 16 ga, since no one makes an AA CF, GM or STS in 16 ga.

If you can get Federals, those are the next best behind the Cheddites.
I have a really bad batch of Remingtons that are no good after 2-3 loadings.

Bought new primed cheddite hulls from BPI. Getting a consistent 5 reloads per hull using a 8pt crimp, for what it's worth. 700X and GD powder for what that's worth.

I am going to be honest.

I never really got any more reloads out of the Winchester CF 16 gauge hulls than I do out of the Cheddites. About 5 to 7 reloads were about it. I also find that the Cheddites allow a broader scope of loads/ballistics than the one piece hulls ever did.

I suppose reloading one piece hulls is a little more forgiving, because they are more difficult to crush. That allowed the adjustments on the reloader to be off a bit and still produce a nice crimp.

However if you get the adjustments correct the 2 piece hulls we have now are every bit as good and even more versatile than any one piece hull ever was.

Just my 2 cents from the cheap seats.

In addition, for the last several years, I have been reloading mostly straight walled hulls in 12 gauge for sporting clays.

I do miss the AA CF 12 gauge hulls, but after working with Top Gun, RIO, Cheddite etc hulls the chronograph data is just as good as anything out of the AA CF hulls and I don't feel bad when my autoloader spits them out at a place where I can't pick them up.

The foreign hulls are 70mm, instead of 2 3/4", and cause ejection issues in the Model 12. Just something to be aware of. Remingtons work, but Herters don't.

My experience with the 16 ga Cheddite hulls is that the new hulls loaded on my Sizemaster seems to have a softer fold on the crimps and when fired, the crimp nearly disappears. Reloads with new hulls is 5-7 times like others have mentioned. Factory crimped Ceddite hull have hard creases in the crimp and seem to split after a couple of reloads right along the crimp.

I can't resist. Razz
If you want to load over 3k times and look good doing it, these are for you. Probably best not to use them in a SA or pump.
