16gg no harm in questioning anything we have to discuss here.

Here is the link to graf & sons website which identify the wads as cheddite:

http://www.grafs.com/retail/catalog/product/productId/2495

These CH1628 and CH1632 wads do not match my Z16, SG16, SG16S, CB16, DR16, CSD16, VP80, or Herters 16 wads.

To be honest not sure what it is other than the label given by Grafs.

Maybe a visual will help a bit.
This is the bag of wads I got from Grafs. Writing is theirs not mine.

Here we have the CH1632 as named by Grafs on the left, the Z16 Commander in the center, and the SG16 Sporting on the right.

Notice the differences in shot cup length, cushion section design and length.

From a different angle

Don't know who makes the wad on the left, but it's sure different than the other two.

Thank you for the assist ole, not familiar with posting pictures but did do a search for old pics from previous discussions.

I've seen some suggest they are the same as the g-32 wad once associated with activ brands (not the more common g-2Cool but I personally question that theory.

Thanks for the pics ole_270. Yup. Definitely a different wad design. The CH1632 wad looks very similar to the long discontinued Herter's wads I have on hand. They both have long shot cups designed primarily for 1-1/8 ounce shot charges, and the gas seal cups also look very much alike. But both wads have shorter compression sections than either the Remington SP16 or the Winchester WW16AA wad.

I've found the longer shot cup but shorter overall length of the Herter's wad has proven to be very useful for 16 gauge magnum hunting loads of larger shot designed for use at longer ranges. I use that wad in my own 1-1/4 oz. #4 loads over a stiff charge of Blue Dot instead of the Remington SP16 wad called for in most published reloading data for 1-1/4 ounce loads. Setting nicely formed crimps which stay closed over the powder/wad/shot column is much easier than it is when using the longer Remington SP16 wad. I'm not trying to pack two pounds in a one pound bag so to speak.

Too much shot above the rim is not good thing here. Bore scrubbed shot tends to be unpredictable and degrades patterns out past 25 yards or so in my experience. I'd rather the wad cup protect as much of the shot as possible. I can control patterns w/ choke selection if I can predict what my shot string will do.

My heavy loads of #4 shot pattern very well and reliably kill late season cock pheasant hard out at 40 yards or more when the weather is blustery and cold. I'd wager the CH1632 wad would serve just as well as the discontinued Herter's wad for the same purpose.

I had a bag of these lying around for lack of data but after reading this I tried out the 22 gr 800x load (not tested, my risk!) with 1 oz of 8s and polywads and x-treme spreaders today on sporing clays in my sxs Grulla and Arrieta and the loads seemed great, opened up the chokes very well for those close shots. Ordered a whole bunch more 1632s from Grafs as a result. Guns are choked imp cyl/mod

Thanks!

Since I already have a bunch of the Cheddite 1632's around I was wondering about subbing them in lower pressure 7/8 and 1 oz loads for something like the Sporting 16. Any suggestions?

Overkill,

In 1 oz, there is some old data using Fiocchi hulls and around 19 to 19.5 grains of unique. Might be a place to start.

I believe Gualandi manufactures these wads. Some outlets may be marketing them as Cheddite wads which adds to the confusion, but they are not as far as I know. Cheddite wads are different, at least the ones I've seen.

16gg- That may be but they look nothing like any Gualandi wads I have seen . Grafs is they only place I have ever seen these wads for sale . Again more speculation over facts on your part.

I had this load tested by Tom Armburst awhile back .

Ched Red 2 1/2" hull - once fired
Ched 209 Primer
18.5 grains Unique
Ched 1632b wad from Grafs
1oz 7 1/2 Lawrance Mag shot
5 shots

I don't have the sheet in front me but consistency was good

psi 10900 fps 1225

I shot this load almost exclusively over last season . IMO its the best 1 oz load I have ever shot at birds or clays . Seemed to work well in all the guns I shot it through .

Also loaded at 17.5 grains ( Chrono'd at 1185 fps ) for a little less recoil and this load works very well also.

I am just glad they exist. Thank you for sharing the new load information fn16ga, my only compliant about the 1628 & 1632 are the lack of load data out there. It seems to me Grafs would be able to push these if they had some data for them, but I remember calling them a year or two ago and they offered no data for them.

I have found in Cheddite hulls, the 1628 to make my go to 1-1/4 oz buffered turkey load & one of the better 1-1/8 oz wild pheasant loads.

Never felt I had the money or time to pattern some 1 oz #4 nice shot loads to see how they would do as a go to duck load.

Hate to admit I have done my best to corner the market on any 1628's still out there. Anyone got any to get rid of? Very Happy I think my number is up well over the amount I will every use for turkey or pheasant hunting during my lifetime, but I wouldn't turn down more!

Fn16ga, the only 16 ga. wads I've seen with plastic fingers (pins) protruding in the wad base are the Gualandi SG16 wads as pictured in the Ballistics Products catalog. The Gualandi SG16S wad has several teeth like projections dispersed around the inside of the skirt perimeter. I have a partially used 500 count bag of each type on hand, so it's not speculation regarding the Gualandi wads.

All the Cheddite wads I've seen have basic wad base cups w/o any protrusions in them. So your info about this is a bit confusing. If the Cheddite 16 ga wads have the same wad base designs, then it might be that Cheddite is contracting Gualandi for the wads and is marketing them under their own brand. It's a common practice within the EU, so I'd not be surprised.

I'm not saying you are wrong here, but I'd have to see a picture of an upright Cheddite 16 ga wad and one of the bottom of the wad base with the pins in them for confirmation. One picture is worth a thousand words as they say. Two would clear it up nicely. Perhaps one of our members could help here.

I have had this bag of 1632 wads I purchased from Graf years ago. Never found a load offered that I wanted to use until yesterday! fn16ga ,thanks for the load you posted here. Went downstairs and assembled a couple of test shells. I assumed that the load used a fold crimp, I happened to have an 8 point starter on the press so that's what I used. They made up beautiful, cant wait to try them out! These wads have a series of pins inside the circumference of the wad base.
Thanks
Art
