Hello All
Federal does not sell its 16 gauge wads
https://www.federalpremium.com/products/components.aspx

So, what wad do they use?

Can someone near Anoka, get the answer?

Thanks
Mike

I have opened the FED 16 X 1 load and I found a 16 ga version of the 12ga self adjusting wad used in their FED 12 X 1 round these are 2 piece gas seal under slit cup. there is a tube with a probe in it that separates the seal and the cup, as the shell is loaded the post telescopes to the correct height for the load being used. One wad setup for all loadable components that vary as the machines are restocked and always a good crimp. If they sold this wad life would be perfection.

And further study of the link shows they want their 209A used in everything but 16ga; can we sue for discrimination??

Byrdog says

The guts of Federal shot shells once the loading machine has set the height of the cup over the gas seal/post the top of the post resembles a palm tree Imagine having these available. One wad in each gauge for all all loads and good crimps to boot. If Fed put these on the market I think they would make another fortune or two.

Federal Cartridge is owned by ATK, one of the world's largest suppliers of military hardware and munitions. They are the planet's largest supplier of small (.50 caliber and down) and medium (20 to 50 mm) ammunition. They produce rockets, rocket fuel, spaceships, aircraft, support systems and just about everything else used by our military and the militaries of many of our allies. On my way home tonight I heard a radio program about how the US has expended a significant portion of its stockpiled munitions in the Middle East and the military is asking suppliers to ramp up production to replace these stores. I don't think their bean counters are looking to 16 gauge wads for improving their profits. Heck, I'm just glad they bother to even make 16 gauge ammo. I live 18 miles from their factory - don't know if I can wangle our little group a couple million wads or not but I will ask around.
Regards,
Jeff

That would be cool. Those wads are most likely designed for straight walled cases too.

I have a large box of those Federal 16 ga. shot cups (thousands of 'em), but not the other half of the assembly (powder seal and crush section). I never knew Federal used such a 16 ga wad assembly as pictured. I always presumed they used the cups with a more conventional fiber wad setup. Maybe they used to. I've never dissected a newer Federal 16. Thanks for the info.

Mr. Smoke,
Maybe you can "recycle" the lower part of a once formed wad to use with your shot cups? Just thinkin'.

I would think that would be difficult since that lower section completely collapses upon firing.
I will admit that I did recycle WAA wads in practice loads when I was a near broke college kid. Shooting over the pasture below my parent's house allowed the wads to build up in predictable areas. Surprisingly the loads with recycled wads shot and cycled an 1100 autoloader fine. However, due to the partial collapse of the cushion section 1 oz. wads became 1 1/8 oz. wads.

Although it hasn't always been so, we now have a pretty good selection of 16 ga wads. for reloading anything from 3/4 to 1-1/4 ounces. I won't lose any sleep if Federal chooses to not market their 16 gauge wads.

However, the Federal 20S1 has proven to work well as a 16 gauge wad for loading 3/4 and 7/8 ounce loads in Remington plastic RGL/Express hulls (the ones w/ plastic base wad inserts). It's good info to keep in mind just in case things go south again for us 16 gauge reloaders.
