At that age if it's not marked 2 3/4 it probably isn't. Measure it.

Nitro Specials were test beds for Ithaca to try out new production designs for what was ultimately to become the Ithaca NID. All Nitro Specials are 2 3/4 inch.

Your question was about ammo to use in a Nitro Special. Since it has 2-3/4" chambers, I would use most factory available lead and bismuth ammo. That includes 1-1/8 ounce loads. I have a 2-3/4" factory Fox from 1934 that I hunt wild pheasant with. I use both 1 ounce and 1-1/8 ounce loads for these later season birds. Most smaller birds don't require 1-1/8 loads.

Lloyd,
I don't know if that is true in a discussion about the 16 gauge version of the Nitro Special. The standard length of the 16 gauge hull was 2 9/16", long after the 12 had gone to 2 3/4".

Best,
Ted
