With the full consent of his parents, I have taught a neighbor boy (Nathan) to fly fish and shoot a shotgun. I ‘m now employing him so that he can earn enough money to buy a shotgun.
Last May I gave my son a pair of 20 G. BSS’s and when I told him about Nathan he offered his Mossberg 500 12 Ga. to Nathan for no charge.
Nathan will pay shipping charges + FFL fees and will have a shotgun this fall.
I plan on loading some light recoil 12 Ga. recipes to make him comfortable with the gun and later introduce him to to standard field loads. |

Well done!
I once took a fella who had never before shot a pheasant, let alone a pointed bird, hunting.
My Rock dog pointed one in an Iowa plum thicket, out it came and down da bird went before his scattergun's blast.
Lad was about 20 years old and grew up in prime Iowa farm and pheasant country.
Good but sad it took him so long.
Location...is not everything.
Another fella and I once took a 13 year old young Iowa lady hunting....after we left her mum, she said her father got frustrated with her shooting.
She did not shoot towards any birds that loop but did have two roosters lift in front of a good setter's nose.
Her eyes, like a dog's, told the best story of each lift.
My friend named his next setter pup...Amber.
We all should pass along what we can.....opportunities on a bird hunting trip can involve more than birds. |

Nick kinda worked on Joel at Moo Dairy 1st trip out . Joel was tagging along to photograph things . Nick got him to shoot clays at the ranch and it got addictive enough where he came bird hunting . Took 3 days and I missed his triumph , but he got a couple birds and he was hooked .... My S-I-L's nephew came down to the camp to hang out a few summers ago . (maybe 12) . Had never shot a gun or chopped wood . Got him working on the BB gun which led to the air rifle which led to the 16 . He nailed a pop can and center punched it - it became his TROPHY he took home . His parents weren't of the shooting ilk , but realized he was pretty safe with us and allow him to hunt when time permits . He works his butt off when he comes down , and for some reason cannot cut enough wood . The kids just can't resist the BB gun and chopping wood no matter how difficult it is for them !! |

@jschultz, Great thread to read in light of the seemingly gloomy news stream lately!
I'm headed to SD this fall and have been fortunate to enjoy hunting on some private lands as well as public. The private land we hunt is owned by several brothers, who all have families and kids who enjoy hunting pheasants, although they just make drives and don't own any 'hunting' dogs. One of their grandsons who was 8 or 9 the first year I met them took an interest in Greta, my now 12 year old GSP, and the fact that she would 'point' the birds. He walked along with us and took great delight in walking up on her points, and would smile the entire time. For the past several years we've gone out there, he's tagged along at least a few days in the afternoons when done with school. Last year he was old enough to carry and hunted with his family and shot a few birds. I've already contacted them about the coming fall and he's going to come with to chase some sharptails and chickens for a few days and has warned me that he's going to ask a lot of questions about dogs, because he's going to get a 'pointer' as soon as he's out of school. Hopefully the birds will cooperate and the lad will bag his first prairie grouse over a point by my old gal whom he took so much interest in.

Good job! We just had our trap club's youth shoot. We gave free shells and birds, plus lunch. A fun time was had by all! A young lady shot 49/50! After our two rounds each we shot some "Annie Oakley's". High school trap teams are coming back here and I am really pleased about that... RB |

Update.
My son emailed me last night and said that the Mossberg would ship today and our local gunsmith told me that he will not charge me for receiving the gun.
So far only Nathan's parents and I know that he is getting the Mossberg and tomorrow when he comes over to cut our lawns, I'll tell him the good news. |
