I was thinking of mixing some #6 & #7.5 for some heavy field/squirrel loads. What's yalls opinion on mixing shot sizes? Pros? Cons? Will this change the projected PSI of the recipe? Anyone have experience mixing shot sizes?

Remington tried two shot sizes in some of their loads a few years back. I don't see any reason why it would change the pressures but it seems to me that I'd want one size or the other for whatever I was shooting at.

Yes Remington did as a gimmick. It did work. I do not believe it affected pressure at all.

However it will seperate the shot string down range as the different shot will carry different mass and resistance. Whether the seperation is consequential is not known to me, but I doubt it matters other than at max effective range

Mixing shot sizes will not affect pressure.

In fact, mixing shot sizes, affects nothing but the 6" between your ears.

I have mixed up to four sizes just to see any difference on clays targets----no increase in pressure---you can safely do this WITH say 4 thru thru 9's---DON'T mix buckshot in with the mix

Did you see any difference in the performance?

As I recall, it wasn't available (Remington mixed shot loads) very long so it couldn't have been a big seller.

I have used a couple bags of the reclaimed shot recently which is definitely mixed and I have done fine with it. Mixing regular hard shot should cause no problems but I don't know how much it would help. The reclaimed shot was used because of the big price difference. $35 vs. 42$

I had a couple of pounds of 4 shot to get rid of and mixed it with 7 1/2s in a 1 oz. target load. Didn't notice a pressure change and they still broke targets.

Back in the sixties, I tested some paper cased Russian Baikal 12 bore cartridges, pressure and velocity were spot on with very little variation but the shot sizes were a little bit mixed.
They were cheap but effective on rabbits, squirrels and pigeons.
I used mixed shot in my muzzleloaders with good results too.

There is no inherent problem in mixing shot sizes like that. It won't change the ballistics to any noticeable degree. But on the other hand there is not much evidence it makes much difference on the squirrel's end either.

To the OP; I don't think you'll have any issues mixing those sizes. I use reclaimed, read; wildly mixed sizes, for short range targets. Pellets in the current batch, pulled from an old trap club, range (sorry) from #10-#7 & averaging ~500/oz, works fine for short range targets, med-long range not so much & I would never use it on game. The grey zone exists in the weight of the drops, not as consistent as new all same size shot drops but well within safe parameters.

Nothing dangerous at all with mixing. Just keep in mind that the lighter pellets slow down faster than the larger sizes and the pattern will stretch out accordingly. Will it matter on a squirrel at 30 yards? Not really. I would however consider the max range of the smallest pellet the max range for the load though since there is no guarantee which pellets will strike vital areas.
