Remington hull
Hodgdon-Longshot 19.3 gr.
CCI 209M
Rem. SP16
1185 fps
9,200 PSI
Anyone try this one?
It's in the Hodgdon's database along with a few variations based on different primers.
My goal is to launch a load of 5's at rapidly departing roosters in my tight 2nd barrels on a couple of my two-barreled 16's. |

I have all the components on hand except the Longshot, so if I can get an ounce or two from a certain member who lives 3 miles from me I'll try this one out. |

My 5th addition Lyman manual shows 20 grains of Longshot with CCI primers and Remington SP16 wads with a velocity of 1201 and a pressure of 9,600 pounds. So that recipe sounds right.
My no. 18 MEC bushing throws about 19.5 grains of Longshot so I figure I am about where I want to be.

Dave I have used that 1185 fps load except with the Win primer for Annie Oakley through a IM choke , it broke targets real well and way out there also . I have never used it on anything live . Recoil wasn't terrible through my 6.5 lb Rizzini |

Thanks, Mark! I think the velocity is more than adequate with 5's on birds, so I'll try it and report back. |

Since I usually have been loading up a season's worth at a time I have avoiding using Longshot in my #5 mag lead 1-1/8 loads. I had heard less than positive results in late season cold weather. Interested in hearing how your test goes. |

Got a 1200 fps or less 1 1/8 oz. load you recommend? |

Not what you asked for but I have had good luck with:
Cheddite hull
WW primer
Z16 wad
24 gr. Longshot
1 1/8 oz. magnum 5's.
Patterns great out of my full choked M12 and will cleanly kill big tough fox squirrels out at 40 yards and maybe a bit further. I think it would make a good rooster load.

John, thanks. Sounds like a good load with which you have actual experience. Do you know the approximate velocity? I have all the components less the Longshot. |

Whenever I make a load for cold weather hunting I use a Fed 209A primer. I don't know if the CCI209M is as hot.
Here's a load from Hodgdon. I believe 800X is supposed to be good in the cold.
Rem hull
SP16 wad
19.0 gr 800X
Fed 209A
1,200 fps
10,800 psi
Just another option.
For testing cold weather loads you can put them in your freezer overnight and get them down to single digits. Put them in a cooler with a frozen cooler pack, drive to the range and chronograph them right out of the cooler. You can also compare them to ambient temperature loads at the same time and see efficient they are when cold.
Regards,
Jeff |

Jeff, I like the looks of that load. I've never loaded 800X, but I used to read some complaints on how it meters. Any truth to that? |

800x does not meter well, I use it for hunting loads only and weigh each charge . I have a RCBS Charge Master Powder Dispenser when loading 800x and Steel powder . If I was going to use it for high volume I would use a different powder . |

I have some 800X but prefer Longshot to it for heavy 16 gauge (1 1/8 oz) loads. When ever I see it big change in bushing size for a change in powder, I try to avoid it in order not to have to make changes to the crimp.

Dave , I have shot this quite a bit , performed well .
Rem Plastic 1-1/8 oz. Unique 18.0 Rem 209P WAA16 1185 10300 Alliant 1998
I shot and 800x Bismuth load with a Standard CCI primer ( a load I got from Dogchaser )in low 20 degree weather in January this year and couldn't notice any difference in performance from when I shot it 80 degree weather . |
