Tom called me with the results of my ITX load .

Load #6 Re-test - 5 for testing
Hull : 16ga Cheddite Green ( BPI #1391670 ) 2 3/4” – Once Fired
Primer : Cheditte 209 CX2000 (Primers are marked with Black marker)
Powder: Alliant Steel 21.5 grains
Wad : PT-1680 (VP80) 4 Slits with (1) BPI 1/8” cork in cup
Shot: ITX10 #4 1 1/8 oz
Crimp 6 Fold crimps .050 deep

1186 fps 11000 psi

Thats the most I could get out of it with that wad . Which is perfectly fine with me .

Could get alot faster with the SP16 or CB0100 wads but I wanted the 1680 wad for more protection because of the hardness of ITX verses Niceshot and Biz . Nice shot in that load is about 1000 psi less and about the same velocity .

Note FYI : BPI list that same exact load with 24 grains of powder . 1300 fps & 11000 psi .

Had a BPI 1 1/8 ITX Longshot load tested that came in at 17366 psi

I just put all my BPI manuals in the recycle bin .

Mark, that looks like very useful iTX load. Good job! How are you going to use it?

I aso had a bad experience with BP data. A 1220 fps load in the book gave me over 1600 fps.

Done.

I will have to check my spread sheets, couldn't find the ITX load I had tested anywhere, its on a disk and my laptop doesn't have disk player, so when I get it downloaded, I will post.
I think it was an one ounce, around 1300fps, using z or sg 16 wad.

Dave at this time my plans are strictly for Ducks . I still have a good supple of Niceshot and Biz , but plan on testing the ITX against Niceshot this year . Its less expensive than Niceshot so I hope it works out . Should make a nice bird load for non-tox areas if I ever have the need .

I still have about 2 1/2 boxes on Nice Shot 5's I loaded up a few years ago for a SD trip. I loaded them in bright red Activ hulls because the NICE Shot was so expensive I didn't want them to ever get mixed up with other shells!

I'm hoping the new Kent Bismuth works out. If it does I'm going to invest in a a good stash of it to add to the 7 boxes I bought.

Like you Mark, I have been very hard pressed to trust BPI load data. I have a few loads remaining in my 'use' list, but those must pass the eye test when comparing to other data (for instances same load data with just a primer change).

The Cheddite hulls are not he best choice for steel or Tungsten loads, from testing they run much higher pressures than the Federal 16 ga hulls do. Best I can say is lighten up the load to 1 oz with the Cheddite hulls, you can go up to 23 grains of STEEL powder with the same load combination as listed by OP, with 1oz you'll get around 1275 fps.

The load is fine the way it is for me . I shot some Niceshot loads last season at the same velocity In Arkanas and Florida and they killed just fine , even a few shots beyond 40 yards .

That said , I Have thought about trying that load in Federal hull and bumping the powder charge up to get little more speed , I want to keep the load at 1 1/8 oz to keep the pellet count up .

Fn16ga -- Thanks for the info. Good job. By the way, isn't ITX-10 already safe for all steel barrels (I know . . . relative to what . . . and whose barrel . . .)? Would one actually need the protection of the PT-1680 (VP80)? ITX-13 is the harder, denser stuff. I've loaded some ITX-10 with normal plastic wad units used for lead. Haven't shot too many of them. I notice no barrel damage so far. Fingers crossed, I guess.

MaximumSmoke , BPI says it barrel safe ( They say their loads are safe too )

Really it probably is , maybe I am being over cautious , but doing a plier test it is a LOT harder than lead, Biz, and Niceshot . I would rather error on the safe side .

fn16,

Many thanks for digging into the very murky BP/ITX situation. Your results with Steel powder are worth their weight in...well, ITX.

My immediate ITX needs are for 2 1/2" shells without necessarily needing the VP80, so I may look into developing a SG16 load. The gun/barrel combination I have in mind won't complain if it is fed a little raw ITX in its diet.

Actually I will likely start with the Rem SP 16 wad and either Rem or Fed hulls. The VP80 and it's lookalikes are less than ideal because of the high contact area which raises pressure. And while full containment within the wad is necessary for steel, it reputedly may not be needed with ITX.

The SG16 base and cushion occupy too much volume for ITX, so the Rem wad might be a good compromise for ITX, with more volume than SG16 and less contact area than VP80. Plus the Rem wad has a cushion which might reduce peak pressure.

I will see how much ITX will fit in full length 2 3/4 in loads with the Rem wad and then try a Hartin crimp for 2 1/2" case length.

The reason I went with the VP80 is because 1 1/8 Itx won't fit in the
sp16 wad with bulky powders like Steel , It may work with Longshot or others.
