I could be wrong, but wouldn't longshot probably provide more speed and less pressure? |

Steel is a slower burning powder than Longshot . With the Vp80wad and 1 1/8 oz Itx 10 Longshot will not work . LS might work with a sp16 wad if it fits in the hull , I havent checked . |

Fn16ga,
I loaded 19gr longshot and 1 1/8 oz ITX into 2 3/4" Fed hull with Rem SP16, and had plenty of headroom. It crimped easily and snugly. I will post pix shortly.
I also tried the same load with a Hartin crimp and cut down 2 1/2" hulls for my 65 mm A5 but it took some manipulation to get a decent crimp. I will send some in for testing after I convince myself that 19 gr LS is the right load.

Looks good , thanks for putting that together , but I think with that hull , wad combo 19 grs will be very slow . Depends what velocity you are looking for .
Off they Hodgdon Site
Hodgdon Fed Hull , Longshot , Fed 209A ,Rem. SP16, 24.9grs ,9,800 PSI ,1,295 fps lead shot |

Yes, how much powder is the question. 19 gr may not be enough and 24.9 is probably excessive for 1 1/8 oz ITX, so the answer is somewhere between. 1200-1300 fps at 11000 psi would be a great ITX load. May have to make a guess and send it in for testing, but it would be nice to have a solid starting point. |

Brewster , I can't imagine that ITX10 would increase pressure in that load more than 2000psi . So if you dropped the powder charge down to say 23.0 grs I would guess it would still be a little over 1200 fps and hopefully be in spec for pressure .
When testing the ITX load with Steel powder and the VP80 wad , I also tested the same load with Niceshot and the pressure was about 1000psi lower with the Niceshot .
That is just me guessing though , Maybe we can get some of the more experienced to chim in.
Another thought would be to reduce this niceshot load I had tested.
Win SX hull Fed209a , 25Grs Steel , Sp16 1 1/8 oz #4 NS 1315 fps , 10880psi
This load is really consistent . By dropping the powder a couple grains and try the Itx for fit.
ITX stacks a little higher than NS , this load is alittle tight to begin with so not sure it would work with a full 1 1/8oz Itx load |

just to give an idea about volumn - most of the old big cases have loads that were for 11/4 with Blue dot . The ones I checked for fit - fit . I would say your ITX/ Nice loads at 11/8 would be about at that 11/4 lead column - they should fit unless Steel is a lot fuller than BD . I could not quite get to 13/8 with any of the reg wads (SP) IE . Tried Fed , Activ and Fio cases , but too much squeeze . VP80 - NICE !!probably would not have been brave enough to try the VP80 and 13/8 if WanDenBurg had not published that load . |

23 gr of Longshot fits in a Fed hull with 1 1/8 oz ITX and the SP 16 wad, but is close to the limit. There is some compression of the cushion, maybe 3 mm or so. That will probably be my test point. Now to load some up and ship them to Tom. |

The only thing I worry about with that Hull & Wad combo and LS is powder migration . The firm crimp should help . |

Going off this load
Win SX hull Fed209a , 25Grs Steel , Sp16 1 1/8 oz #4 Nice Shot 1315 fps , 10880 psi
This load is really consistent .
I drop the dropped the powder by 2 grains and put it in the Fed hull with #4 ITX10 ( Don,t use this load it is untested)
It's a little tight but it crimps just fine
I may send some of these in to Tom |

Fn16ga,
That 25gr load sounds really outstanding but Steel is unavailable here without shipping it in. But it might be worth paying the fees, as your load would be one of the best ITX loads I've come across.
Just for comparison, how much is the wad cushion compressed in your load? You might be able to check it by shining a strong light through the sides of the hull.

Brewster, I edited my post as I think it was unclear what I did. The 25gr load is a tested Nice Shot load . The one pictured is the Same load except I drop the powder charge by 2 grains and put in ITX 10 to check for fit ( it is and untested load ) .
Its a tight fit but it crimps well , so I know there in compression on the wad , but as long as the crimp holds that's not a bad thing.
I will send some in for testing along with some other stuff I have for Tom. |

Think your going to have to start trying different primers instead of using the Federal 209A in your loads. When I developed my 1540 fps steel 16 ga load I found the Federal 209A to be a bit much pressure wise, the CCI 209M worked much better and didn't peak pressures as badly with STEEL powder. |
