Fn16ga,
Many thanks for your efforts and leadership in this area. The development of affordable high performance non toxic shot may be the single most important technology for sport shooting today. I am becoming convinced that non toxic shot will be mandated for all hunting across the country in our lifetime. It's already happening in California, and it will spread. Dealing with this reality will be our challenge going forward, and your work will help us greatly.

Thanks I will have to try the CCImag primers.

Blue Dot worked well for Hevishot loads, you can get away with a milder primer like the Winchester 209 using Blue Dot, gives a bit more wiggle room for pressures.
This is 1 1/4 oz #6 Hevi @ 40 yards, BPI VP80 Blue Dot load 1280 fps, meat grinder so I reduced it down to 1 1/8 oz of shot.

Hey BT!
Non-tox or steel threads are so very rare here... I should have guessed it would be you!
I ended up not sending in any 16ga loads for testing, I kept delaying while trying to get out and pattern test and chrono various loads before sending them in. Finally after 5 months delay, ran out of time and so just sent in 5 loads in 20ga.
Kieth at Precision got them today, hopefully testing in the next few days. Sure wish I had time to move forward on the 16ga load, based on the info you gave me, maybe help you get another data point in series. So unless I load and shoot your load, I don't think I'll be using the 16ga mod 12 for ducks at least in beginning of season. |

Dave,
As I mentioned I've been shooting the 1540 fps 16 ga steel load for 14 years now, can't beat it for early season ducks. Recently went for combo dove and teal hunt at state waterfowl area, non toxic shot only. Really worked out well using the 16 ga. had 6's for doves and 4's for Teal. Shot quite a few of each and was happy with it. |

I talked to BPI this week about Longshot loads with the VP80 and they told me that their testing with recent powder batches caused them to remove LS from any recommended loads with the VP80/1680. Pressures were high even with the 19gr load I was discussing. (Cheddite 1 1/8oz Itx, 19gr LS)
If you are loading LS with this wad you might want to reconsider or have it tested.

PT1680 holds precisely 1 1/8 oz. of no. 4 ITX and fits snugly in 2 1/2" Cheddite hull with 19 gr LS.
If you must, BPI lists the load for 2 3/4" with a quarter inch spacer.
3 slits in the wad per BPI, mica dust for good luck if not better loading.
It's the nearest thing to lead we've used since the ban, the 12 gauge magnum bucketful of steel is no longer necessary for pheasant and greenheads, the 16/ITX combo really does the job, almost like back in the day.
Brewster , FYI had that load tested 1259fps 17366 psi WOW!
Also had another ITX 10 load tested with steel powder that is base off of one BPI loads , that I made 2 changes , a 2.5 gr reduction in powder and a primer change, it came as much as 3000psi over |

All,
I have also been in contact recently with BPI concerning their ITX loads, and Longshot is definitely off their list for PT1680/VP80 ITX loads due to excessive pressures.
BPI will be publishing new ITX loads with Alliant Steel powder soon. |

Sending in two loads to be tested.
The first is based off of this Hogdon lead load 1 1/8 in a
-federal hull
-Win. 209
-Rem.SP16
-longshot 26.8
-8,600 PSI
-1,295 FPS
I figured there is 2400PSI to play with so we will see what we get. The only thing I changed was I only put 1 1/16 oz of ITX 10 #4 shot 465gr, which is 10 pellets less than 1 1/8oz, it just crimped better for me and it would keep pressure down slightly. If nothing else this will give an idea of how much pressure difference there is between ITX10 and lead.
The second load I'm sending in is a BPI load that is suppose to be 1 oz that I am reducing to 7/8 oz in hopes it will come in under 11000PSI
Cheddite hull once fired
cheddite 209
24.7 gr longshot (25gr is what the load calls for but this is what my MEC drops)
BPI VP80 3 slits, 1/4" 20ga cork, 1/4" 20g a felt
7/8 oz ITX 13
16 ga overshot card
Im going to call Tom on Monday and hope he isn't done testing for the year. I will let everyone know what this yields. |
