I never tried them on pheasants. I do like the 8's for clays. I guess I've thought of them as more of a promo type load with soft shot. Have you used them on wild pheasants with good results?

Sorry, my hunting is different than most folks
I hunt the corners and the water traps and usually
only walk 1/2 mile between the two vehicles.

We flush them close and anything works

Thousands mostly with Texan MII and then a PW 375, and a Mec 600 and a Pacific 155 for 2 1/2 and then a Pacific 105 for special stuff.

I have a LARGE stash of CF Win hulls but also lots of Rem, Fed, Chedd, and all brass Alcan, and a bunch of old *57 Rem also.

Also lots of 2 1/2 hulls for the Geco, Krieghoff, A-5, and Win Model 12s

OK, I should have known that. It just seems odd that you'd suggest the Herter's loads when you know you can make better loads with better shot, and have the enjoyment of designing, testing, and reloading ammo for your own shotguns, and know exactly what you've got. I read 105 of those 150 Herters reviews and one person mentioned that they made good close range pheasant loads. The vast majority like them for clay targets and doves. They probably are a decent dove load, and i'm sure they kill pheasants. I'd just rather make my own based on my hunting and shotguns, some of which are old, new open-choked, tight-choked, etc. When I do use factory loads, I gladly pay a little more to get the good stuff. Maybe the Herters loads are fine, but I'll let someone else run those experiments.

Hey Skeetx, I know you're just yanking my chain a little and I have no problem with that. I'm probably wearing everyone out a a bit around here, but my work starts up in a short while so relief is in sight! Smile

My favorite 16 ga load is: Cheddite hull, SG-16 wad, 21.3 gr Universal Clays, Cheddite primer, and 1 ounce of shot appropriate to the bird being hunted. This gives me right at 1200 fps. I load a lot of #7 nickel plated for wild quail and some #5 and #6 nickel plated for guns I don't want to shoot Fiocchi Golden Pheasant loads in. I finally got my new MEC 9000 GN dialed in for these hulls and loaded some of the purtiest purple shells using my stash of once fired Herters hull.

Max Smoke,

I have patterned it and it went 79% @ 35 yards with .015" of choke in my 1100. That barrel is pretty well massaged, with long cones, porting and thin wall Briley's soooooo......YMMV

That barrel patterns everything well, I haven't found a load it doesn't like.

OK, here we go sports fans! Small sample size, but 100% better than not checking.

These first three are the load Dogchaser suggested. A 3 shot average gave me 1273 fps.

Fed Hull
B&P wad
20.5 grs. Universal Clays
Fed 209A primer
1 oz Nickel 6's and 5's

I dropped the powder half a grain to an even 20 grains.

This first pattern was shot at 25 yards from a .011 choke which is probably about Light Modified. It was the nickel-plated 6's. Hammer time! I do believe the B&P wad throws tight patterns.

This next on is an ounce of nicel 5's out of a .026 (full) choke at 40 yards. Nice!...and those are hard hitting 5's.

The last pattern went low because the ankle biting flies were killing me! It's an ounce of nickel 6's at 40 yards.

Again, as I have suspected the B&P wads pattern tight, and this will probably be my 2nd barrel load in my little 200E.

Next I tried out the following load:

RGL hull
SP-16 wad
19 grs. Unique
W209 primer
1 oz. Nickel 6's

I sent one round through the chronograph with an R-16 wad just to see if the velocity was close to the SP-16 loads. Pretty close. It was overstuffed, so I'll stay with the SP-16 as it was a perfect fit. Anyway the R-16 wad round went 1214 fps.

I shot two with the SP-16 wad through the chronograph (as listed on the recipe above) and both of those went 1225 fps. (True!)

A couple more dandy patterns!

This first one is again the nickel 6's through an .011 (LM) choke at 25 yards. (SP-16 wad)

And this is the same 1 oz. nickel 6's at 40 yards through a full choke. (SP-16 wad)

I am going to try 5's at 40 yards in that 2nd load and that's probably going to be the last pattern for a while. Patterning fatigue is setting in.

One last thing. (fn16ga)

I set up 3 feet from the Chrony today. Seemed to function just fine.

Dave , I am interested to see what that Rem Unique load does . My Guess is 1260- 1280

Guess Guess I was off on that one . I shot that same loads Except 18.0 grains unique and r16 wad in a 2 9/16 hull and got 1251 fps crimps right at .060 with a good roll over , I was also shooting in 92 degree weather .

It was about 75 when I was shooting. Really like that load!
