Sent some loads off to Tom Armbrust and here is the 16ga results. The original BPI load calls for 29.0 grains of long shot.

Fiocchi hull new, fiocchi primer, 28.2 grains longshot, z16 wad, 11/8 oz (485gr) #4 lead

This was for 5 shells
FPS 1461 V. 22
PSI 12560 V. 500

Tom said he just tested similar load with 22.0 grains of longshot and a Winchester primer and got 1245 FPS with 9180 PSI.

Something else of interest, he stated a once fired hull vs a new hull will raise the pressure anywhere from 500-1000 PSI. Fun guy to talk too.

Thanks for the info! What was your goal? What is your next step?

That other load Tom mentioned sounds promising.

I like the wads and the fact that BP tries to give data ... However , try to tip toe around loads I can't get a 2nd opinion of thru Hodgdon's etc . Always feel a whole lot better when I see it's in the ball park somewhere else !

All my hunting loads are made with new primed hulls. fired hulls are fine for targets. Last season I was shooting chilled 1.125oz #6 @ 1400 fps through a S1 choke at Grouse .It is point and shoot now hunting. The Maine woods are thick and the birds get behind a tree trunk as they fly away with a grin on their faces.

Here is the load number out of BPI 16ga 5th addition M1605252 listed at 10300 PSI and 1370 FPS

My goal for the load was to simulate the performance in the "premium" $25 a box hunting loads. Based on the similar load mentioned above Tom suggested 23 and no more than 24 grains would give 1280 FPS range with acceptable pressures. My MEC 23 bushing drops 22.8 of longshot so thats what I'm going to load.

Hoping to get some HW13 #6 for my birthday and plan on sending off some shells to get tested based on this data.

Load# 150817-7056 (STINGER 16)
HULL: CHEDDITE 16-gauge 2.75”
PRIMER: CH209
PROPELLANT: HODGDON LIL GUN 48.0 Grains
WAD: CSD16 (3 slits) +(2) 14FW20 (felt wads)
Mica dust wad, please.
SHOT: 7/8 oz. HEVI-SHOT #4/#5 382 grains. (More than enough shot for lethality.)
FOLD CRIMP: 6-point

Results: 8500 PSI 1525 FPS

That load is not in the new manual. The highest 1 1/8oz load they have for the Fiochi hull is 22 grains 28 grains in a 1oz load.

mcrewz,

Do you have the exact data for that 22.0 grain Long Shot, W209 load Tom mentioned above? (1245 fps---9180 psi)

I've never heard this before. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks!

The inside of the hull gets scorched , becomes rough adds resistance to the release of the wad from the shell. Long tubular no tox wads are affected the most but it also affects lead shot wads. My hunting loads all call for new primed hulls.

It's old news that some of BPI's published loads are overly hot. But it's good to remind us of it for the sake of those of us here who've never tried any.

Years ago, I bought one of their 28 ga reloading pamphlets and proceeded to load up a 1/2 dozen trial loads using one of their 7/8 ounce express load recipes exactly as published. Check weighed both the shot and powder charges to be sure. I made sure to use the same exact components as published, and double checked my finished crimps for rim fold, depth, and finished taper. All crimps were about as perfectly formed as I could get them. Upon firing the first two loads, the hull mouths of both compression formed 28 gauge WW AA cases were extruded into the forcing cones to the point that both hulls ended up nearly a 1/4 inch longer. Good thing neither hull wall separated from the base. Boy was I ever grateful Olin was manufacturing one helluva strong hull at the time. I believe both my gun and I would have been in very rough shape had I been using polyformed hulls.

Talk about hot!!! WOW!!! The remaining trial loads were quickly cut open and broken down. Six of my precious 28 ga AA hulls got ruined and tossed.

I called BPI CS up to warn them and got what seems to still be the standard reply--I screwed up somewhere in my procedure. "OPERATOR ERROR!!!".

Well, I kinda doubt it seeing how I'd been reloading perfectly safe 28 ga ammo on the same press for years, and check weighed everything on the same accurate scale I'd been using for just as long (or longer).

No more for me thanks. Once burned, twice wise.

This may be of interest to some of you. Chronographed my first ever shotshells this past weekend. Load as follows:
Once fired Cheddite hull
24 gr. Longshot(weighed)
1 1/8 oz. #5(weighed)
WW primer
Z16 wad
1376,1378 and 1381 were the fps for 3 shots
Somewhat faster than I thought it would be. And recoil was a little unpleasant off the bench with the M12.

John

John, where did you get the recipe? Too hot for my guns, but they were very consistent!

I'd back off to 21 or 22 gains and see what you get.
