I'm new to reloading, and have a very experienced reloader who is willing to show me the proper way to reload shotshells. He doesn't shoot 16 gauge, so he doesn't have any components to work with. We would like to load at my house, so that I can learn on my own equipment. I have about 750 Herters Cheddite hulls to work with, but I am not sure what primer/wad/powder combo I should be looking for to shoot standard one ounce loads @ 1050 - 1200 fps. Does anyone have any load recommendations? I would prefer components that are readily available online. Thanks in advance for the suggestions. |

I use the Claybuster 7/8 oz 16 gauge wads, and load 1 oz of shot. This gives me a great stack height in the Herters hulls, and they come out looking like factory shells. Getting the precrimp set, so that the petals fold in correctly is critical. Lots of options for powder and primers. I am currently using Fiocchi primers and Universal powder. You do want to use a European primer. |

For primers my preference is Winchester 209 for light to medium loads; Federal 209A for heavy loads. Some store loading data utilize several brands of primers, but there is enough data for WW & Fed primers to use just about any powder/hull/wad combination desired. |

I just loaded about 300 purple Herters hulls on my MEC 9000. I used 21.3 gr of Universal Clays, SG-16 wads, 1 oz shot, and Cheddite primers. These components gave very nice crimps on my 9000, pattern well and chronograph out at about 1225 fps in this heat, probably about 1200 fps during hunting season. |

Are all 209 primers interchangeable? Are there significant differences between manufacturers? |

I'm new to reloading too and have Herters hulls, but I'm looking for a load under 8000 with either 3/4 or 7/8 oz loads. Thanks |

No! Stick to good or tested published data , ( I don't consider BPI data good data ) http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/ , Lymans 5th are 2 good sources . Stick with the SG16 ( G/BP 16) wad for 1oz to avoid powder migration in that hull . |

Thank you skeetx. This is the information I am looking for. It may sound silly, but I am just trying to find a load that I can find components for readily. Buying primers locally would be nice since primers ordered online are charged a HAZMAT fee.
I have an Excel spreadsheet with load data that was sent to me from a member of this site, but the majority of the primers under the Cheddite tab are ACTV 209. I can't seem to find this primer anywhere and was wondering if there might be a substitute that would work.
Please keep the suggestions coming. |
