It's that time of year again - to post pictures of your game, dogs and 16ga guns for us to admire. Since my seasons here in Maine have not yet started, I'll lead off with a couple from years past.

French 16 and the first pheasant I took with it:

The late, beloved Sasha, during a grouse hunt up north:

Time to see yours.

with his first pointed bird on his first solo hunt. "Smoke" is a French Britt pup at 5 3/4 mos. of age & a whopping 22.5 lbs. I have to intertwine the GPS collar with his puppy collar so it doesn't fall off. The shotgun is a JP Sauer.

Dave The bottom picture with Sasha in it is just dreamy. I love it when there are pines mixed in with the changing maples. That pic could have easily been in MN. Our grouse season opens this Saturday. Good luck to all who venture out.

My setter Briar (he's seven yrs old now) was on fire opening day last week at the release site I go to, with six points in forty minutes. Too easy, and too short of a hunt. I was literally pointing my finger at them and going "bang bang" after fifteen minutes and my limit:

A chukar hunt yesterday on the opener however, was a different story. Briar was excited and ready to go, leaving me in a cloud of dust:

After three or four miles of tough up and down hiking, he had one point on a covey of huns that flushed wild, and then he found a big covey of chukars:

After all that work, they flushed in range, and I knocked one down, but we couldn't find it. Must have winged it. So frustrating. Using 2.5" ITX 6's, I've had nothing but cripples with that load. I've had great luck with ITX 4's on pheasants, but that's a thin pattern at 40 yds for chukars. Going to try the new Herters bismuth, and/or my small stash of nice shot 5's next time. Either that, or go somewhere else where I can use lead.

It was a long hike back to the truck without a bird, but a great day nonetheless with fantastic memories. Good to be in the game and it's such a joy to see Briar work again. That's what it's all about. Very Happy

Great stories, great looking guns, and excellent looking dogs! Makes me want to give up rabbits and beagles and get a birddog.........almost! Finally cool enough to start running beagles if I go early.
Mark, tell about the hammer gun.

Zeb's first bird. I wish I could say he slammed into a point, but this young of the year grouse flushed wild on the right and Zeb was working over on the left. He did make a nice retrieve and I let him hold it for a bit. The first wild bird is always memorable, even if not perfect. Only bird we saw.

Edit to add I was using my 16 gauge Merkel 200E.

Dave,
Congratulations! It's fabulous when you put it all together and bring home a wild bird. Nice shooting and nice retrieve. An excellent all German team.
Regards,
Jeff
