One from the week of Columbus Day, way Down East.

This bull was taken by a friend. I was along as one of the spotters and strong backs needed to get it from where it dropped - blessedly, near the road - into the pickup. It weighed 653 lb field dressed at the check station, which put it just under 800 lb live weight.

My friend, in the picture, holds the gun he used. It was an 1880-ish vintage cape gun from a maker in Suhl. The right, rifle barrel - steel - was chambered in 11.5x50R, an old BP cartridge. The shotgun barrel - twist - was a 16 ga. After fixing one of the hammers, broken a long time ago, he spent the summer getting ready. He made his own cases, cast his own bullets and worked up his own loads - 365 grain cast bullet at about 1400 fps. One of those from about 90 yards put the bull down in its tracks - almost somersaulted it and broke its spine. The finisher was a home-cast 16 ga round ball lung shot from the left barrel.

I've had some exceptionally good eating from this moose, better than a lot of good beef. And this trip made for a great hunting season.

I hope you had one, too.

Damn. It's easy to see why the animal is called a "moose". Nice gun and account of making his own ammo. Gil

I wish I had a better picture of the gun to share, but I don't. The grip is carved, not checkered, and it has the horn grip on the lower tang like many other German guns of its era. Really a pretty gun. And a 16. Very Happy

As to the size, keep in mind, that's a relatively young one, 2 or 3 years old. Add another 200 to 400 pounds to the dressed weight for a mature bull. If he was larger, I don't know whether we 4 could have loaded him. As it was, we used a come-along and tow straps, first around the antlers and then under the "armpits" to drag him up the ramps and into the bed of the truck, and it took us the better part of 2 hours. For those interested in doing likewise, keep in mind that the sides of the bed, where the tie-offs for the come-along are, bowed inward under the weight. Fortunately, it was elastic and not plastic deformation, but it was yet another example of why older pickup trucks are better than newer. They don't bend when you use them as actual trucks.

Late to the party again, but here goes: some "regular" hunt photos and some not.

WyoChukar, Super photos . That is one beautiful pup you have . I wish I had more opportunity to chase wild pheasant and grouse , that part of country is a long way from where I live.

Thanks for sharing.

WyoC, great photos. Interesting use of the Border Collie. Does the dog point, flush or herd? Wink Gil

Gil, that is an interesting question with an interesting answer. He is both a flusher and a pointer...sort of. What I have done really throws a wrench to the pointer vs. flusher debate.

Rusty naturally flushes but if I don't want him to flush the birds yet I command him to "sit". This way, as long as I am paying attention I get the benefits of both a pointer and a flusher. I guess that makes him a "Scottish Sitter". The idea came to me last year while chukar hunting and I figured "why not?".

Savage, I use a couple of Canon cameras. My full frame is a 6D which I use that for scenics and the like. Most of my wildlife photos are taken with a 70D. I use a 17-40 lens with the 6D and either a 70-200 for hunter action photos or a 400 for the wildlife stuff.

I will say that shooting birds with a shotgun is immensely easier than it is with the camera. I don't require much cooperation when I use the gun! A 400mm lens sounds like a lot, but realistically it is like using a .410 shotgun. Birds have to be that close. Then there is the matter of finding them in the view finder if they are in flight...a fun and rewarding challenge.

Wow great pictures!!! Must be a heck of a story behind the picture with the coyote and mixed bag of all those birds?
