I haven't paid much attention since I went to the Golden Pheasant 5's so I didn't even realize there was a load out there as potent as the Federal Wingshok. Any reviews on it? Is it as effective as it looks on paper? Looking at the 1 1/8oz #5 |

I used them for spring turkey this year and last.
Very stout load. I use them sparingly in my Model 90, a little much on the old stock.
They pattern great in my gun. |

Are you referring to the Federal premium Pheasants forever upland load at 1425fps? Several of us got them at the sweet 16 shoot as prizes, but I haven't heard of anyone shooting them or hunting with them. I'll probably try them in my Japanese sweet 16. Definitely not in any of my "vintage" guns. Good to hear Pronghorn got good patterns with them. |

Is all that velocity really necessary , seems like and 1 1/8oz of #5 lead at 1200 - 1250 would be plenty for any bird at any reasonable distance . |

When I go down Pheasant hunting it's in some very open country out west with very wild birds. Thinking it might be an option to load them in the top barrel and a milder load in the bottom barrel. |

Might be good for an 1100 if you forgot to put the o-ring back in? |

I shot a few squirrels with them, just the ticket for early season when there's a lot of leaves. They absolutely hammer tree rats. I'd use them on ducks if it were legal.

I've got a box of the 6's. Dick's was blowing them out for $10 a box a couple years ago, I didn't realize they were 1425 fps until I got them home
I'm going to pattern them against a Winchester super X 1 1/8 #6 load this weekend through a Briley .025 choke. Will post results. |

I've got a couple boxes of the 5's I'll sell. Shipping would be a killer, so perhaps someone could pick them up at the next Sweet 16 shoot. I step up to my 12 gauge if I need this kind of load. |

I have used the 1 1/4 oz version on Pheasants and Prairie Chicken last year with good results. |

Several years ago I was at a big sporting clays shoot and Federal was there. I asked why they didn't make their classic Gold Medal Pigeon load (which they no longer make at all) with 4s, 5s and 6s for pheasant hunting. It was the 12 gauge, 1 1/4oz load with high quality plated shot at 1220 fps and was used for live pigeon shooting with 7 1/2s and 8s. Possibly the best patterning, most effective and efficient shotgun shell ever made. They just smiled and said they knew how excellent that load was, but when the average guy goes shopping for hunting loads the faster they made it go and the more shot they stuffed in it, the better it sold. Sad, but true. That's why we are cursed with the current Pheasant Forever and Golden Pheasant loads. More reason to reload.

Kind of tells you that the "average guy" doesn't know much about a lot of things.

16 Ga. ammo choices leave much to be desired, off the shelf, for sure.
I try to match the load to the bird. RST 1oz. 2.5 is my dove load.
Unless I open the bag of DR's.... |
