I plan on using my deer processing money this year for a 16 ga browning citori for shooting trap. does anyone on here use one? what barrel length work best? currently I am using a 16 ga Marlin 90 with 28 in mod/full barrels and wondering if longer barrels would be better.

I'd get a 525 in 30 or 32". Preferably 32" but you'll probably have to pay more for it.

I have a 525 in both 30" and 32" and a grade 6 in 28" and shoot trap with all three. I would say I shoot all three equally but I'm not a hundred straight shooter either. But I would say my favorite gun is the 30" 525.

I have a Model 525 Sporting in 16 Gauge that I have successfully used for trap with 1 oz. No. 8 Remington Game and Estate Shells. I am now starting to load 1 1/8 oz in 7 1/2s and 9s. Will use the 7 1/2s for trap.

We shoot sporting clays on Thursday at Middletown, OH and Fridays at Kokomo, IN. We shoot trap on Tuesday at Monroe Conservation Club, and Thursdays at Farmland Conservation Club. We shoot on ocasion at Indiana Gun Club, usually on Wednesdays.

Best luck in your hunt for a new Browning,

IMO...

I'm not sure barrel length really matters much, I believe patterning and understanding your choke/load relationship for the distance you hit targets at + shooting a gun that fits is far more important.

FWIW; I shoot my 16ga Citori Upland 24" w/Trulock IM choke bottom barrel or a 27" Merkel 200 choked M top barrel low gun for trap 1oz *8 summer 1oz #7.5 winter and usually score equally w/both guns in the low/mid 20's best to date is a 24, not bragging, just sharing, shoot a gun that shoots where you're looking and throws a nice pattern at the ranges you see the targets at and go at it.

That said, I picked up a Long Tom 12ga single w/40" barrel a couple years back, what hoot to drag that old girl out for a line of trap....

Fun stuff, enjoy...

I use my field grade 16ga Citori Lightning for trap, skeet and hunting. It has 28" barrels and does just fine at everything. For 16yd trap I use a Mod Choke, having a Full in the other barrel. I shoot skeet and trap gun down.

One thing I do for fun is to take a 1st shot on the target and if I miss then use the 2nd shot to try and get it. I keep track of how many hits and misses I get with each shot.
I also use my Win21, choked M/F for trap and skeet, with spreader loads for skeet. It also has a 28" barrel.

I have some Auto-5's (12 & 16) that I use for trap. Barrels range from 28" to 30" to 32". The 32" seems to give a better sight picture but my scores aren't that much different from the shorter barrels. I also have a 12ga Red Label with 26" barrels and it does good on trap to - several 25s.

It all depends on what else you plan to do w/ a 16. If you plan to also hunt and shoot skeet and/or 5 stand/sporting clays w/ it, then a 28" standard Lightning model might work. That model will weigh about 6.8 pounds. The 28" model weight might be on the light side for trap but will work for occasional informal singles shooting if you restrict your load selection to 7/8 ounce loads. The 28" model is a well balanced gun w/ just enough weight forward feel to swing swell on crossing targets which you'll see a lot of in skeet, 5 stand and sporting clays.

If you plan to dedicate the gun only for trap, then I would recommend an 8.8 to 9.5 pound 12 ga. trap gun instead. Trap targets do not require nearly the amount of swing some folks think. Trap shooting requires a perfectly executed shot w/ a crisp, short, precise swing. A heavier gun tracks better for this type of shooting and is easier on your shoulder after shooting a full 100 target string (4 rounds). If doubles are in the offing, then nothing beats a 12 ga. O/U trap gun. One with choke tubes does it all very nicely. I'm certain you can find a good used one for the same price you'd pay for 32" 525 16 ga Citori. It will also be easier to find and might be had for less.

Also, 12 ga ammo will be cheaper and easier to find, and more effective at singles, H-cap, and doubles targets. That's an important economic factor, because excellent trap shooting requires constant practice to master and maintain.

Hope my input helps you make a wise decision. Good luck.
