I pulled the plug on work at 61, after 39 years in a large corporation. I was in the exec ranks, traveled a lot, long hours etc.
Its quite an adjustment to go cold turkey, but I did.
I read a lot, worked out every day and still do five years later.
Besides bring a gun nut I bow hunt quite a bit so I can hunt most of the year and I shoot indoors in the winter several days a week.
You just have to find somethings you enjoy doing and realize that every minute of every day does not have to be filled with a major activity, take some down time. |

I'm surprised that we haven't heard from Mike. He's probably busy with the Gun of the Day Club. Gil |

What a great thread. I am 2years out and will walk away from a 30+ year job as a cop at age 50. I work as a SWAT commander and dearly love the guys and the work. I'm scared I will miss them and drive my wife nuts.
Thanks to the folks who have chimed in with their wisdom. Thanks to the OP for sharing. |

My dad retired from work at age 78 when the VA held him 100% disabled from wounds suffered in WWII. I asked dad why he waited so long before retiring. HIs comment: "would you want to stay home all day with YOUR mother? Point well made and taken. Gil |

Gil, you are either the bravest man I know or the dumbest! I take it your mother has passed on?

Dale, somewhere in between. Mom is 88, still drives, has a great sense of humor, and is the mother of 10 children and I am the oldest. A friend remarked "your mom is a pistol." My reply: "No, she's a sawed-off shotgun" to which she was told what I said. She loved it. I still wouldn't want to stay home with her all day and neither would she. Gil |

Retired in the fall 0f 88, finally getting the hang of it. Enjoy it, do what you want to do and do it as long as its legal. |

Love that, Gil!
I have a couple more years of work then semi-retirement. This one 3-day mad dash to South Dakota is going to turn into two 5-day trips, along with other adventures. |

Ever notice that this is a forum of which the members are primarily old farts? (myself included).

Well I retired at 59.5 after 40 years with the same company. 36 of those 40 years I was on call. Constantly in touch with company. At first with a call in to check if customers had left a message for contact. Ending with a cell phone. Made good money, but, was never able to leave on vacation. I can't remember a Christmas where I wasn't called to work somewhere. I have no idea how the kids or wifw put up with my job. Now, wife will retire in 18 months, For now, I am enjoying not having a phone. And no if I had one I would not answer it. Wife loves it as I do the house chores, garden and hunt. New Mexico has a first dove season of 60 days. So I have done a lot of hunting. The two weeks wait and quail. Will get a boat and do some fishing. Oh and have visited in-laws in SD a couple of times in the last 6 months.
You will find something to do, Just leave the TV off. It is a time waster. |

You gentlemen are making me jealous. I still have 30 years to go. Not all of us are old farts, some of us just are at heart. |
