Hi,
A guy recently posted at SGW about issues ejecting Herters, someone then mentioned their 1938 Mod12 had issues with new Winchester hulls, and I had the exact same issue last week-- so I wrote took some pictures and measured 11 different 16ga hulls I had, and wrote it up.
Since I already wrote it up to help the poster at SGW and posted pics, and I can't seem to get pics up here without hosting them somewhere else, I'll just link to my writeup which I put on my blog for future reference.

May be of interest to folks with concerns about hull-lengths for reloading for various guns/reasons.
Enjoy,
Dave |

Dave , you concur what we've said a few times here !! that extra length , small as it is , makes a world of difference in M12'S . they are the VEGA with a 396 in them and no room left . Makes Byrdogs trimmer ssooo valuable - can take .005 off a case and never look back . Makes you wonder if Remington was paying attn. to the Win thing , as there isn't a Rem I know of that has ever had a problem . The 12ga Rems even handle 3'' without a hiccup . |

The only factory 2 3/4 loads I've found reliable in 16g. M12s are Remmies, and probably because they tend to be a bit short. Personally, I think that the small M12 receiver is just a tad too small for 16g 2 3/4 shells. IIRC, it was originally designed as a 2½ 20g, but the ejection port was later modified to take 2 3/4. The 3" 12g M12s were the same way, I never found mine 100% reliable with 3" shells. Don't get me wrong, I love my M12s, but the 16g guns tend to be finicky.
I've also used brydog's trimmer to take just a bit off hulls for reloading for my 16g M12s, as suggested in the article. |

I'm with Mike, I have a 1920 model 12, I don't reload, so just run RST's through it, slick as can be, why fight the problem?
