| < 16ga. Guns ~ What is the difference between a Merkel model 47E and a 147E |

| I found two 20 gauge versions and they both look very similar to me and appear to offer the same features (straight stock, single trigger, splinter forearm, color case hardened receiver), although not all versions of these models have these same options. I remember reading somewhere that the Merkel model number designation wasn't very intelligent/consistent all the time. The 1620 seems to be the most obvious. What difference is there between 47 and 147? |

Model 47E features a Greener cross bolt with double under-barrel locking lugs, scroll engraved case hardened receiver, Anson and Deely boxlock action, Holland and Holland ejectors, English style stock available with and single or double triggers.
Model 147E features a Greener cross bolt with double under-barrel locking lugs, hand engraved game scenes on silver-greyed receiver, Anson and Deely boxlock action, Holland and Holland ejectors, English style or pistol grip stock and single or double triggers.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've spent a lot of time searching for Merkel SxS guns that I've seen their O/U a lot. One of the things about paying this much for a gun is that you have to love how the gun looks as well as performs. With this in mind, I think the three piece forearm is an abomination. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right? I also have a 16 gauge O/U (Browning Upland Special). I would like to add a 16 gauge SxS, (as well as maybe a 20, 12, and 28 gauge SxS over time). I really wish I had bid on the 1620 that sold on Gunbroker for $3000...  |

Yes, straight stock and single trigger is by far my preference. I have several O/U shotguns with both pistol grip (including POW) and straight stock and I really prefer the straight stock for hunting. I have two SxS shotguns and they both have double triggers, but I can't get used to shooting with the DT. I've been thinking about this a lot, as someone said that it just take enough shooting with the DT. Life is too short to compromise, however. If there were only DT shotguns available in certain gauges, or I couldn't be picky and wait for a ST, then I guess I'd have to give in. I don't mind that it restricts me to certain makes and models.
By the way, I also prefer the color case hardened look to the silver/gray engraved look. Most of my O/U are silver/gray, but since I'm upgrading here, I will get what I really think is beautiful in a non flashy way. |

Your link didn't work, but reading the "code" it looks like you were pointing me to a 2016-el. Thanks for the suggestion, as others have said, you are very generous with your knowledge and guidance.
Part of why you pay this much for a gun is the appearance. Unfortunately, I think the Merkel O/U guns are fugly! They have the three piece forearm and those flared out parts of the receiver. Sure, I guess there are reasons for these things. If I don't love it, then I don't love it. I'm a huge fan of Browning Citori shotguns, which don't typically have color case hardening (I actually saw a Browning 725 12 ga. with case hardened receiver) and I can live with that. If I'm going to take the plunge into the world of high quality SxS shotguns, I'm going to take my time and get color case hardened receiver, straight stock, and single trigger.

| I have a Merkell SxS 16/70 gauge. How do I determine the model? The closest I found online was a Model 8? The date code is 274, marked made in GDR. Plain finish but stamped with the top quality grading. It is a great gun, and my first box of shells scored 23/25 at trap and won me a 3d place in a club match. |

I'm not an expert by any means and only recently started to get into the idea of SxS shotguns and specifically Merkels. I don't know what 16/70 gauge means, but it seems like the equivalent of 16 gauge 2 3/4" chamber... is this correct? From my searching of on line gun sales sites, there is a model 8. I don't know much else, except to say that the GDR marking likely means that the gun was made after WWII but before the unification of East and West Germany.
There may be others who will be able to provide more and better information. |
