Hahaha! That is a hoot, Jeff!
I would be all over and engraved Sweet Sixteen with grade III wood and a PoW stock! |

Looks great Dave. I am sure you will enjoy. Maybe Browning will offer an upland special one day. Like yourself I prefer a straight grip. I have 2 Franchi 48 guns one is round knob and other straight grip. Find myself carrying straight grip the most. Enjoy. |

The eagle has landed!
Disclaimer: These are quickie iPhone photos.
Well what can I say? It's a different beast now. The new straight grip feels terrific in all of my carry positions, and it comes up nice. The checkering fore and aft is now uniform and perfect, and with the oil finish it has much more of the old Browning aura about it now. My stock guy is pretty savvy and that little curved spot at the front of the lower panel is right where your ring finger bears, so it's not grinding into the checkering.
I had this done by Lance Wells of Slim's Stock Shop in Lindstrom, MN. I hadn't let out his identity until now because I didn't know if he wanted to lots of these somewhat tricky jobs. He said it was OK because the price would keep most away. He won't do less than the full job, because he's fussy about having all of his checkering match and doing the job correctly in all aspects. After 40 years in this craft his reputation matters. If you read back in this thread you'll see there are complications with the hollowed pistol grip.
I had Slim add a sling stud because along with being a handy grouse gun, this is the perfect gun to strap on and cover some prairie miles, or the long walk to the yonder bunny thicket. I'm going to take the forend cap up to my local Amish smith tomorrow and have him install the front swivel stud.
Worth it? It is to me. YMMV!
Maybe with luck Browning will offer some stock options in the future.

Mark, my pleasure indeed. You know my SW16 had the plainest stock on earth and Slim found the grain in it and it now looks fantastic in person. I can't imagine how one of the SW16's with a well figured stock would look with an oil finish like this. I went into this purely for the grip change and got so much more. |

Dave,
Now that you have that project done you might as well sell it to me and start another one. I wouldn't want you to get bored. |

Jan, I'm never bored. I have another project starting up. It's a 12 gauge SxS, so I'll spare everyone the details. |

Might take another week or so before I'm back to shooting it. Taking the forend cap up to get fitted with a stud later this morning because I'd most likely botch the job. Now's the time to get keep the gunsmiths busy. I have a classy minimalist leather quick-adjust 7/8" sling that will most likely live on this gun. |

Super nice job, Dave. I'm always a sucker for a straight grip on a shotgun. My ancient A5 16 is a straight gripper, but it isn't so pretty and light weight as your new one. Wow. . . . 5 lbs, 12 oz. . . . pretty darn light for a repeater. If Browning doesn't catch on to the look and function you have created it's a loss to themselves and their customers. |

Thanks, Tony. I dpn't know what Browning was thinking. The old magic of Browning grips has been sadly forgotten and swept away by the influences of modern target guns. This ain't a target gun.
