Sorry if I have this posted in the wrong section. I am getting ready to sell my 1953 Marlin model 90 16 gauge (mainly shoot semi-autos and can not get use to the double trigger). The shotgun has double triggers, 28" barrels and is in very good shape. Does anyone have any insight on what these guns are worth? Thanks!

Brett

The 2 biggest factors are condition and your willingness to wait. If bluing is good, wood too, there is no wiggle when held and shook like a broom with the forearm off then it passes the first value test. Guessing it's mod/full based on length and latch release system (both less desirable), then I'd say $350 to $400.

If it didn't pass the first test above you'd be hard press to sell it for more that $350, much less if the forearm/broom test is not passed since that fix is going to cost a few hundred to fix.

I have a 1950 & 1953 both 26', got more in each than value ($850 & $550). One cost me a new stock and recoil pad, the other a full reface with springs and level reset. Great guns but you'll never make money on them.

I have 2 16s, a post war and a pre war. Both in very good condition, paid 300 for one and 400 for the other.

sorry if I Hijack your thread, but what causes the action wobble, and how do you fix it?

Wobble = loose hook and pin
Fix = micro weld and refit hook
Cheap fix = Coke can, scissors and cut into can and make a a small square of aluminum, wrap a small square of aluminum around the back half of the pin.

Mike is spot on with problem. Midwest Shotgun Works for instance charges $365 plus shipping to properly fix, replace/repair springs, and reset top hinge lever.

Gary in MN was cheaper but would not commit to doing marlins anymore. Said he doesn't like them.

I considered the fix worth it since I see more preservation quail and rabbits in my future hunting plans. This is my go to gun for those activities.

what happens if the wobble gets worse? also can it be caused by a week spring on the lever

The more you shoot it the more the wobble will increase.
Try the alum shim adjustment and report back please
Mike

made a shim out of a beer can, but its a little too thick and binds at opening, made a smaller one, but it wants to work its way out. But, it does not wobble.

Good, keep investigating that idea
You MAY need to drink a bunch more beer to get enough cans to fully test the idea Smile

As Mike said it will slowly get worse with time, some day the top barrel will start miss firing (FTF) as it gets off face. The only other thing I know is that it makes the gun about a $200 value at best.

The one I purchased claimed to be tight, when it came in from the store to my ffl it was not. We worked out a deal to refund me $150 of the price to put towards the repair. I only agreed because a 26" with ic/mod is kind of hard to get your hands on.

Your best people to talk with about Marlin issues are Charles and Barkley here on the site, helped me a lot.

My 53 is 26" ic/mod with thin style latch forearm
My 50 is 26" m/f with old style forearm

I prefer the separated, short barrels models but avoid that year or so where they screwed up and put the pregnant forearm on them.

Been considering a 28" m/f model but only if it's ready to use at around $350 delivered.
