Hello,
I received an MEC 600 Jr. As a Christmas present. I have been interested in reloading so I guess it is now time to start. I have Herter hulls right now but what I am not sure about is how to find out what primer to use, powder, and wads. I am sure there is a website that can help or a book. If someone can help it will be greatly appreciated. |

Pick a load or loads you want and then buy your components . Buy a Lymans 5th and read it . We can certainly help with any questions you might have.

Buy a Lyman's 5th Edition Shotshell Reloading Manual........it gives you the basics that you need to keep it simple and easy. |

Joining the load group is well worth it.
I'd look to see which powders are available to you local. That will be the most limiting factor. If you order Primers or Powder, there is the Hazmat fee. If you plan to orderr try to find someone to order with you, to reduce the fee.
As for wads, you'll most likely have to order them. I've had good service from http://www.grafs.com/ I've been loading fiberwad loads, since I don't load in any quantity that would be tiresome.
What hulls do you have? What type load are you looking for? Target, Upland, Turkey, Duck...??? |

I would figure out what type of loads you want make and then check into what powders best fit. Next I would choose powders that are actually available in your area. Mail ordering components during times of high demand/ short supply can be frustrating.
Magnum lead shot is harder than chilled lead (due to antimony content) and will give denser patterns/ shorter shot strings. This is great for mid to long range performance but not always so wonderful for skeet shooting or hunting in thick brush or timber when margin for error is of prime concern.
There are many fine folks here that will be more than happy to give advice concerning target, field, turkey, or non toxic shot loads. Ask away.
Learning proper adjustment of the press is crucial to getting quality loads rather than frustrating troubles. Once again, feel free to ask. |

Herters cases are Chedite hulls best with Chedite primers. |

Good comments above. Do get a manual and the Lyman is the best there is, in my view. Find the cheddite hulls 16 ga section and that should get you started on the right track.
I load a lot of Herters 16 ga hulls. They are a decent hull in 16 ga.
FWIW, I use Win 209 in my Herters hulls and they work great. |

But if Cheddite Primers are not available without paying the hazmat fee, which is my situation, then by all means substitute. Locally Winchester Primers are easily acquired but Cheddites are non existent so I use Winchester. I have never had a problem.
There are differences of opinion but I have taken the stance that since not all of the combinations are easily found locally that as long as I closely approximate a published load with a low pressure I will be ok with substituting primers.
If I was working up loads in the high end of pressure and velocity I would not make that substitution. |

Yet another benefit of not falling for the "max load/ speed of light" trap. |

And another thing I do that breaks the rules is I load three different brands of hulls with the same components. Herters, Federal, and RST right now, and if I ever get any other brands of hulls I'll probably still do it because I load light. |

A fine xmas gift! Welcome to this reloading hobby, keep asking there is a lot of reloading experience hanging around here.
Ditto on the Lymans manual, easily the best thing you could do to get started in the right direction.
Best of luck in your new hobby. |

Reloading is a great way to go. Arguably, there may be times when you can buy shells cheaply, but you now have the ability to load thousands of variations to tailor your ammo to what you want and need. I also recommend the Lyman book to start with, but there are many printed manuals and the powder makers' websites. |
