Just curious what loads has everybody been using in their New Sweet16s

If using factory what load or loads ?

If you have used your own loads what is the shot weight and FPS ?

Have you tried any that have not functioned the gun ?

Heres what I have so far .

Federal factory 1oz Game load 1165 fps will not function the gun reliably .

This load will not 1313fps
Cheddite hull 2 1/2"
Cheddite primer
15 grains 700X
DR16 wad
3/4 oz of 9s

These are ones that I have tried so far that will function the gun with no malfunctions so far .

Remington Game loads 1oz 1200fps 12 rounds

Cheddite 2 1/2" ,Ched 209 ,20.0 Green Dot, BP SG-16, 3/4 oz , 1428fps, 10,666 -12 rounds

Cheddite 2 3/4", Fed. 209A, Green dot 20.0, DR 16, 3/4 oz, 1485 fps, 9,966- 12 rounds

My 1oz load that I have chrono several times at 1185fps , I have shot this load about 75 times through the gun so far without a hiccup .

I am going to try some 7/8 loads soon.

Thanks , Mark

Not much help here. I've only shot 11 Federal 1 1/8 oz factory loads (1295 fps) and they functioned fine. It's now getting the straight grip conversion, so I'm out of commission with it for a while.

Mine did not like the I oz Herters (stove pipes) Will try them again after a breakin period with stiffer stuff.

Mine has functioned a number of 1 1/8oz loads (federal, Remington, PMC, Fiocchi, and Dave's killer reloads), 1oz Remington GL's and 1oz Herters. Did not cycle my 7/8oz reloads but these were some of the first 25 I tried.

I've shot a little over a box of various shells on 4 quail hunts so far:

Herter's factory Dove and Quail 1 oz #8 lead, 2.75 in.

Win SuperSteel hulls (CF); 16.5 gr. Green Dot; W209; R-16; 1165 fps; 9700 psi; 1 oz. #8 lead; 2.75 in.

Cheddite-type hulls; 22.0 gr. STEEL; 209A; VP80; 1150fps (?); 7800 psi; 7/8 oz #7 steel; 2.75 in.

I have had no issues with feeding, except two Cheddite-type reloads (Fioccho--ugh!) shells didn't feed correctly due to a poor taper on the crimp edges--crimp edge hung on chamber rim. The reload's fault, not the gun.

I suspect that these guns do need a little "breaking in" despite my good luck so far.

Enjoy!

I have a pair of golds in 12 and 20. Both bought new. It was recommended to fully disassemble and clean al the factory grease out. Browning production seemed to goop the stuff in there pretty thick. Coating internals with a thin coat of quality gun oil, and some light grease on the bolt guides solved quite a few early hiccups, the Internet advised.

Given the Golds were gas guns, not inertia, I wonder how much this would cross over to the new SW16? A few boxes of heavy loads also sped break in. If your having any feed issues, I'd consider full breakdown and clean/relube with a product you trust.

I pulled the bolt and trigger assembly, cleaned and lightly lube a couple times already . I will shoot it again this weekend and then pull it a part again. Recoil operated guns won't function well dry.

Just rereading this thread and realized out of my 11 shots, seven were Herter's 1 1/8 oz and four were the Federal 1 1/8oz. I think these will most likely slick up pretty well after a few hundred rounds. Like I mentioned to Black Belt the other day, these are hunting guns, and if a snappy 1 oz. load is the lightest mine will cycle I'm fine with that because hunting loads for me start at 1 oz.. I'd much rather shoot my 2-barreled guns at clay targets and not chase the empties!

S.O.P. is to clean a new gun completely before using. If the fed 1oz does not cycle then the gun is dirty or faulty. If they cycle my Browning Automatic Shotguns they should work a new A-5.

Dave I'll go along with that line of thinking . I don't think the 1oz loads will have to be too snappy , My 1oz 1185 fps work just fine and are soft on the shoulder.

I did try some Herters 1 oz today and about have of them worked . My gun is clean and well lubed.

I ran 15 of this load through the gun and they worked just fine .
Daves' load

16 ga. Rem "RGL" hull
W209 primer
15.5 grs. Green Dot
Claybuster CB0078-16 wad
7/8 oz. lead shot

go figure

I don't own one, but have thought about it... but wow, I have to say that it sounds like much lower performance than I expected! I've bought several 12ga and 20ga semi for $800 or less, and been able to shoot 3/4oz at 1050fps to 1-1/4oz at 1500fps, within a box or so of shells.

I know you guys are not wanting to disparage these great guns-- and again, I would really like one myself-- but surely you don't really find a 16ga requiring a load heavier than 1oz and faster than 1165 to actually function to be acceptable performance? Some of these reports have started to cool my interest in the SW16 a bit.

I'll be interested in hearing how these guns move along as you guys shoot some heavier loads in them, more shells, and get them broken in. If I had a gun not firing a 1oz load, I'd probably pull the trigger group, put polishing compound on the bolt slide, and sit there racking it for an hour while watching TV...

Just picked mine up, cleaned, assembled, shot some Rio 8's (1oz) and Fiocchi 8's 1 1/8oz, both cycled. Sure it will cycle my pheasant loads. (kent bismuth)
Will find out tomorrow if it will shoot pheasants.

I shot my A5 SS today, it operated flawlessly on Herters 1oz 1165 fps #8 rounds. It is a very soft shooting gun with these loads.

When Browning sent me my "field test" gun, I shot mostly Herters 1 oz--and quite a few of them. Perfect function, not a hiccup. It would not cycle with either RST 3/4 or 7/8 oz.
