Wow that looks good.

I'm consoling myself about the dropping temperature here with a big bowl of beef stew I made last night and a freshly baked batard of french bread, warm from the oven with cold butter on it.

You brought back some good memories for me. When I was about 12 years old, we went to the UP of Michigan to see my Dad's mother, my Grandmother.

At that time she was in her 80's, about 4' 2" soaking wet. She still had a pump at the kitchen sink for water, and a huge wood burning stove.

Every morning we were there she baked fresh rolls for breakfast! My God, there is no better smell in the world. She still just had the outhouse, and worked about a 1/2 acre garden herself. Canning the vegetables for the winter.

She raised 13 children when times were tough, loosing her husband when he was about 50 something.

Talk about tough, people have no clue today what tough is. Wink

Dale, you are correct on two counts there.

Practically nothing smells better than homemade bread or buns in the oven AND most today have no idea what "tough" is.


Mostly we don't know "tough" because it's no fun and we all, those of us who know it and those who have never experienced it, try hard to avoid it. I have old memories but they make me shake my head in wonder, hardly believing some of what I went through. Glad it's behind me.

We're certainly blessed. One well-plucked and well-prepared pheasant would be an unimaginable luxury to many- past and present. May we all appreciate our good fortune.

Peppercorn garlic dry rub recipe prep for 24hrs. Then pan seared with olive oil. Roasted in the oven with a beer in pan covered by parchment and foil for 15 min and then uncovered for 7-8 min @425. It was moist and delicious!
