I saw a Winchester 24 16GA in a local shop today but I don't have a good idea of the value. It was in great condition with very few flaws or dings. Asking $799.00. Is this a good price?

That's about twice what I would consider a reasonable price and well above what I would consider a good price.

The 24's are not well thought of; I've always thought they are kinda cool in their own odd way, especially the 16's and 20's. I passed on one in 16ga years ago and remember it fondly. Personally I don't think it's a bad price if you want one, especially considering what else is out there for that kind of money. The problem is, many sellers equate the Winchester name with "raise the price", and the 24 is maybe the one gun where the name doesn't carry the water. A local store has a couple of 12's for around $1K; 'course, they've been there a while.

Oops; now that I looked at the link in Skeettx's post, maybe it is high.

Agree with F2F. Not so much the price as the reputation they have as being a "problem gun".

I have one in 16ga, my first 16ga double, very good condition, and I think I paid nearly $600. That was 20 years ago too.
Its not a bad little shotgun, chambers are pretty short, (2.75") but, sometimes reloads didn't work well. short hulls are no problem ever.

A couple years later ran across a Parke Trojan in 16ga in 2.5" chambers that no one would buy cuz one, scared of 16ga, and the short chamber really turned people off. Those ignorant bastards got me into a great deal however! Dealer willing to part with it pretty cheaply, had it too long and was at a place to get rid of it. Lucky me, became my go to 16ga. So the poor 24 kind of is neglected.

I bought a 16ga choked IC/Mod (not too common, seems most were mod/full) 6-7 years ago, nearly new condition, for $500. They won't win beauty contests, but they are fine shooters. If that one is in high condition, that is not too far off. Offer them six $100 bills and see if they jump....

I had a 26" ic/mod 16ga mod 24 that I traded for a picture of a Parker! Just kidding! It was actually for an Ithaca 37 16ga imp cyl and win 37 16ga. One of my better trades. I guess I could have used the 24 as a tomato plant stake. A friend of mine still has it, and loves it. He thinks it's one of his best trades!

I think I will hold off a while and see if it is still there and make an offer.
