Herter's shells, using the cheddite hull recipe.
Cheddite 209 primer
24gr. IMR7625
Trap commander wad (Z16)
7/8'ths oz. #5 bismuth
Spred'r insert.
Precision reloading roll crimp die.
Home made hull trimmer (dowel and a blade)
It took two or three tries to get get the hull length right with this recipe. I tried to fold crimp this load initially but it ended up with a bulged fold crimp (The hulls worked very well with a non-spred'r 1oz. load). Ended up with a hull length of 2 1/2", which left me with 3/16th of hull above the disk. I have the roll die in a drill press and hand hold the hulls while roll crimping. I also lube up the die with a bit of lithium grease. Let the die sit on the hull lightly to warm up the plastic, three to four seconds, then bring down the die till I feel a moderate amount of pressure, and....voila! |

What kind of speed are you running your drill press at. I think slower is better up to a point.

I think getting the hull length the proper hieght above your disc or over shot card is key. It might take a few tries to get everything right with your particular recipe and hull used. |

1250 fps....9,400 psi. BPI
It's the only bismuth load I know for the cheddite hulls. I now have two loads for my WinCF hulls. |

Great looking shells you have there. I'm in the process of working up some also. That load is fast yet it's low pressure, nice.
Would the Cheddites be the same basically as the Federal hulls? Straight walled and large volume...

Not sure about the federal hulls. I only reload for cheddite and Win CF. |

I just loaded some cheddites using this Bismuth recipe from BP. I ended up trimming the hulls to 2 1/2" and roll crimping them for a short chamber 16 of mine. They roll crimped very nice with a 2.5" hull.
HULL: Cheddite 16ga. 2.75” hulls
PRIMER: CH209
PROPELLANT: Alliant Steel 23.0 Grains
WAD: PT1680
SHOT: 1 1/8 oz. 492 gr. BISMUTH #4/#6/#7
FOLD CRIMP: OS16 over the shot
Result: PSI 7900 FPS 1150 |
