Great day for a rabbit hunt! Jumped 7, ran 7, killed 7. There were four 16's used- a 31L, a BPS, a '64 swt 16, and a L.C Smith. I have 900 briar infested acres to hunt with plenty of rabbits. Would love to post the pictures of dogs, guns, rabbits , but all of my and my wife's efforts have come to naught as regards posting pics. I have them on Photobucket but we can't manage to post on here. Apparently I'm too simple minded. |

Beagleman- you're one up on me- I haven't figured out how to hunt/shoot and take a picture at the same time. Needs way more hands and coordination than I have. |

+1, AM, being a bonafide old fart, the last thing I ever considered was taking a camera to the field.
Never heard of digital, photobucket etc.
Now that I have, I have no desire to learn nor start, great for those who do, just not for me.

I have a new fangled thing called a cell phone and oddly enough you can take pictures with it! Those of us that still hunt usually have one with us. I have a third arm also! Very convenient. |

The beagle is a nice 2 yr. old male that is a grand pup of two of my old field champions. He looks a little beat down because he ran all-day, 9 hour hunt.
Thanks Mike for the photo help! You are the best! |

What a beautiful dog! I love the look of the darker dogs, especially the brown on his coat! Stellar year for bunnies here. I thought I cycle was at its peak last year but they have proven to be everywhere this year, even in the marginal to poor cover!
Congrats on a great hunt. Oh, nice guns too... but I like the dog best! 😁 |

Looks like you had a great day over heah', Beagleman. Where are you in SC, and what part of GA are you hunting? I live in GA only a mile or so from the Savannah River, which as you know is the state line between us and SC.

S Hillis, I'm from Clemson and I hunt outside of Elberton. I have a nice piece of land leased for rabbit hunting. |

nice! sure do love following a pack of beagle dogs through the woods.
I'm close to you guys, as well, as I do almost all of my hunting in Lincoln and Wilkes County. |

A friend of mine used to hunt rabbits that way back in Michigan. He would laugh that the beagles would get a rabbit going in a circle around the hill and with each lap more rabbits would join in! Rabbits sure are stupid, but that's their role in the world: be dumb, prolific, and a meal to everything that wants 'em.
I have never tried it your way but it sounds like fun. My Dad used to do it that way back in Missouri before I was born. Out here in Wyoming rabbit hunting consists of spot and snipe with rifles for bunnies out on any sunny hillside below a cliff wall on a sunny winter day. Centerfire action means head shots only at 100-400 yards. .22 rimfire action is an "anything goes" affair and great for kids. Currently we are absolutely infested with cottontails.
What's the flea situation? Nobody here puts a rabbit in the game pouch, at least not a second time. We carry them by leg or with a cord and watch for the wave of bugs coming topside. |

I immediately skin and gut a rabbit right after it's been slain to avoid those pesky flees. Then wash them off with a little snow. Then I put them in a vest. And wash them up a little better when I get home. Freeze them and when the time is right put them in a crock pot with a few carrots, potatoes and other goodies. |

As soon as we kill a rabbit, the fleas start to jump ship. They don't seem to stay on a dead rabbit. Then we squeeze the guts out and skin them at the end of the day.
We shoot rabbits, but our hunts are more about listening and watching the dogs work. |
