I couldn't shoot that group at 21 inches. I'm that horrible with a handgun. |

Well, I shot the new pistol in combat league tonight. I was going to shoot the entire league with my Glock 34 as it is my home defense pistol, and I've been getting better with it. The lure of new steel was too much. My one handed shooting with my master hand wasn't so good - the 1911 recoils differently than the Glock. However, when I get to use both hands the Dan Wesson shines. Shot my highest score ever - 360/420 with 12 Xs. Each week the range gives a prize for high score on one target. The same guy, who is an outstanding pistol shot, wins it every time. Tonight it was target #6. 12 shots using both hands at 21 feet in 24 seconds with a mandatory reload (two 6 round mags). I tied him with a 114/120! We each get a box of Federal .22 Automatch. I am looking forward to more trigger time with this pistol.

Oldhunter,
That is a great looking pistol! I think a firearm becomes special when you personalize it yourself.

My buddy thinks the Dan Wessons are the only 1911 made. He picked up this 9mm last week and also has a CCO .45 from a few years back.

That Valor is tasty. I'm still struggling with not buying a Specialist in .45 ACP. I don't think I can keep it up. Finally have my gun set up just how I want it. Factory magwell, LOK G10 grips, replaced the green fiber optic front with a red one and now own 8 magazines. Have to buy ammo by the case as this gun and my Glock are hungry!
I'm struggling through some rotator cuff issues and can't presently shoot a shotgun. However, shooting a pistol doesn't hurt and actually augments my physical therapy. Something about lemons and lemonade comes to mind.

Another Dan Wesson fan here, they are good stuff.
Have a PM7, and it shoots about as good as it gets. |

+1 on the Ruger SR1911. I have one. It comes with rosewood handles and shhoots very well out of the box. I had tritium sights installed inasmuch as I expect I'm more likely to be using after dark should the occasion arise. I also had the trigger worked on a bit so it breaks at 4 1/2 lbs.
I am quite happy with it. It's amazingly accurate. It has worked flawlessly and is a lot of 1911 for the $. |

Nice guns, targets, leather, etc.
I wanted a 1911 as close to mil-spec as I could get, more for plinking and steel targets. We do a lot of falling plates at my gun club. So the choice came down to a Rock Island or one of the Turkish guns.
I bought Turkish, made by TISAS, from Bud's a couple years ago for the princely price of $350.
Out of the box it was very tight - no wobble anywhere, strong springs everywhere - and shot very well. Accurate and consistent with just about any ammo I could feed it. I'm quite happy with my purchase.
A friend who'd saved his spare change for a couple years had bought a Kimber for himself for his 50th b-day. After trying mine (which cost about 1/3 of his) his first comment was "wow" and his second that the trigger on my TISAS was better than the Kimber's.
I agree wholeheartedly with the "Buy American" sentiment, but I have to say that buying a former military piece is not the way I'd go. You wind up paying a lot for some stamped verbiage - money that could go into ammo - and years of wear and use haven't helped those guns' accuracy (across the population as a whole).
But, buy what you like.... The fun is in the shootin'. |
