I have a bit of a dilemma. I'm not a big shotgunner, that is I don't shoot a lot of shotgun. No wild birds left around here and the thought of shot in my squirrels is anathema to me. Consequently I don't have cases of hulls. In addition all but one of my 16 bore double guns is in a drilling or combination gun and has 2 1/2 in. chambers. In the guns that aren't nitro proofed I've been using Mag Tech brass hulls, black powder and am completely satisfied with them. My....frugal Prussian nature...keeps me from buying more brass hulls. Using those cases in more than one gun is obviously the issue, different chamber sizes. Is anyone aware of a full length, 16 bore sizing die for use in a metallic cartridge press? If one is available that would eliminate my difficulty, short of purchasing a box of brass hulls for each gun.....which right now seems to be my only recourse.

Though I have not tried it, as other projects have routed me away from my 16 gauge brass hull adventures, I always intended to resize, if need be, with the ring-type resizer on a MEC 600, using a sparing amount of the same resizing lube used on high-powered rifle brass. First of all, though, are you sure you need to resize? Mic your hulls and/or try them in different chambers to see if you really need to resize. I wanted to keep resizing to a minimum; I thought it would reduce hull life. Frankly though, I've never heard anything from the ancients about the need to resize brass shotshells.

Well, I have used many ways

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/612669/lee-load-all-2-shotshell-press-sizer-die-16-gauge

The old Lyman drive in sizing die

A MEC sizing ring and a mec piece or a piece of pipe and a vice to force in and a hammer and punch to get out
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mec-Reloader-Resize-Ring-for-16-Gauge-Pt-43516-NEW-in-Factory-package-/282351466259?hash=item41bd757713:g:Yz0AAMXQ74JTQE5U

A wrist pin from a diesel engine bored out and polished (works great)

and a Mec Super Sizer

All work well, use Imperial Sizing Wax on the hulls

Mike

p.s. top of the line is 4-D

Yes 4-D has great stuff
http://www.ch4d.com/
and the
Magtech brass does just fine for black and the OLD MEC primer seating die can be reversed for large pistol primers Smile

I have made a depriming punch for the large pistol primers and have an old mec primer seating station to seat them.

With the old station you can switch around the post and base to prime large pistol primers

Now here is a totally opposite option

Get 100 or more of these hulls

https://www.precisionreloading.com/cart.php#!l=CH&i=165GA

No need to size, load with black powder and shoot and DISCARD.

Easy Peasy

Mike

I tried lubing the cases and using the ring die on my Lee Load All and it didn't work except for the base. I'm shooting these hulls in 3 different 16 bore guns, two drillings and a combination gun. The newest is a mere child at 110+ years old and the oldest is from the late 1870's so....if I call it 1878 it's 139 years old. The chambers are of different sizes and the hulls are tight in two of the old guns. They work but I have to push them into the chambers. After a few shots they get a little snug. Were I using them in one gun I doubt there'd be any problems. At least I never had any before.

I am completely ignorant of how any of the MEC's work. It seems most loading, i.e. sizing, of shot shells is just for the base. If that's the case with MEC it won't do any more than the Lee does. I need something to take the hull body down a bit. If push comes to shove I can cobble up something on my lathe....even as poor a machinist as I am.

Buffalo Arms is out of stock on the Ch-4D dies. I buy a lot of rifle dies from Dave at CH-4D and I bet if Buff. Arms is out of stock so is he. There's sure a lot of black die boxes on my shelves. He does make good stuff.

skeet...I didn't see those hulls in that link.

Thanks to all for your suggestions.

I have the full length sizing die, flare die, and crimping die from ch4d and use them on the magtech brass hulls. They work as they should on my rcbs press. And the sized shells fit all my 16 ga guns. As I recall when I ordered the units, the sizing die and crimp die are on his web site, but I needed to call for the flare die. Also, I reload the hulls with smokeless powder and the pistol primers.

goat, thanks for that! Even as expensive as they are if they work, in my book they're worth it.

skeetx, thank you. I didn't know that.
