I have been cleaning my recently purchased 16 ga Sportsman 48. I'm familiar with the model as I inherited my Dad's 12 ga Sportsman 48.
In removing the stock I noticed there was no bearing plate between the stock and receiver. I bought one on-line and the stock doesn't fit flush with the bearing plate on.
I saw a poster another site mentioned this observation regarding a 16 ga Sportsman as well. From the indentations on the stock where the bearing plate would go it's apparent it never had one.
Did the 16 ga Sportsman not always utilize the bearing plate? Mine is a 1955 gun. |

That's a distinct possibility since the early 870's didn't have one either. |

I had a Sportsman 48 16ga, and I had it completely disassembled for cleaning. To my memory there was no bearing plate, and there was no indication that there had been. I remember this because I remember that the mating surface of the stock showed no sign of dirt or oil accumulation and I was amazed. |

the 11-48's and 48sp's were inletted right to the wood/receiver . If you intend to use an 1100/870 stock , you need the Rem plate plus a fine card to match it to the receiver . If you don't , that hammering of the action will take the edge wood out unless you are using REALLY lite loads !! It's most important that the butt fits to the receiver . |
