This year's session of warm southern flow may have moved the woodcock a tad quicker.
My wife heard her first of the season 3 days ago in SE Ohio near the river....when they first moved thru, I do not know.
That said, in a cold winter during Feb of 2006(?) when, sadly, one was permitted to shoot grouse that late, we moved woodcock leaving tracks in the snow.

I didn't get a picture, but I was walking to lunch yesterday on Peachtree St in the middle of downtown Atlanta, walking alongside a building and I looked down and there crouched by the wall was what seemed to be an injured woodcock. I can not, for the life of me, figure out how a woodcock could get to this location. Strangest thing I've seen since I passed a hen turkey standing up against the inside median wall on I285 during morning rush hour about 5 years ago.

Alan, that's a mighty nice thing to say, but you still owe me the $100. Wink
Arch, I wonder if the doodle struck a building flying the night before. They will fly on moonlit nights while migrating. Years ago I found one dead as a door nail in a city square; it was in perfect condition, and I have no idea what killed it. I put it in a suit pocket and carried it to a friend's dad who was an ardent birder. He got a big kick out of it. They are beautiful birds. Gil

yes they are beautiful. I amazed my friends by telling them it was a woodcock and then showing them a picture on my phone. They had never even heard of such a bird. One mentioned it stuck out like a sore thumb in the city but I told them how incredibly camouflaged they are in the piney woods.

I'm guessing it did indeed fly into a building. I just didn't realize they migrated like that.

Here's a photo of one from this past season. Note the bluish dun coloration on some of the feathers. These birds are rarely seen during the day as they are secretive and the places they occupy often very thick. Dogs are indispensable for successful hunting not dependent on blind luck.

The dogs and I have been enjoying the birds you let live for the past several weeks. Laughing

Rick Grimes,
Hope all is well in your world, I just joined here. kgb advised me of this particular board and how nice the members were, so I decided to join. Nice to see you here on the 16 forum.

We had a lot of fun on the Northern Tier of Pa this season. Plenty of Woodcock & Grouse and even some nice hold over Pheasants.
