Seen one today up at the local preserve. It's still a little early. Should be about the end of the month when they really show up.

I was at camp in NY along the Canadian border April 1st. Went out to one of my food plots along a large wetland complex at dusk. There where at least 12 males singing in about a 15 acre area. They should be at there singing grounds but they don't start till almost dark. Check the RGS website they have a woodcock tracking map.

Was at an auto dealer in Duluth today. Had a dog along. Let him take a run through the swamp behind the dealership. One woodcock went up after some sniffing & zipping around.

Yes.

Carlos Avery WMA and the Ruffed Grouse Society hosted a Woodcock Walk at the WMA near Forest Lake last night (Monday). The forecast was for rain and snow. Most people never showed up.

There was a great presentation on woodcock biology in the office and then we went out at sunset to look and listen for peenting woodcock. It started snowing big wet flakes before we went on the walk.

We were doubtful about seeing any birds displaying in the heavy snow. We finally heard one peenting bird. The we saw the horny bugger start his flight.

You could see it fly up for about 50' then you lost it in the snow. You could hear it going higher and higher. Then you could hear the different sound as it came down. Then it re-appeared out of the snow and landed back in the same spot. He repeated this several times. It was really a unique experience.
