BPI is discontinuing The PT1680 which was VP80. The only steel wad is going to be CSD 16 etc.

AND just yesterday they told me you you can't use the CSD 16 wad as a replacement for the 1680. That will make a whole lot of their data useless.

That is a real shame-- the 1680 is superior to the CSD16. Better volume, better protection, better pressure results.

If you are a steel shot shooter, I would buy some 1680 before they're gone. This really irks me, as I have sent in several test loads using 1680 recently, after getting better results with it than the CSD16.

Can the OP post up where he got this information from, there's is nothing about BPI discontinuing the 1680 on their site.

I got it from Anthony at BPI when I called them on Monday about a reload question. He told me they they were not going to carry them anymore and the replacement was CSD 16.

Interesting, I thought they had already said this about a year ago, but didn't worry too much since they seem to continue to be out there at BPI and Grafs. I really hate to hear this since I kind of have a different use for wads:

Ched 1628 for Turkey
Rem SP16 for Wild Pheasant
DR16 & CB078 for Sporting/Clays/Quail
CB100 & Rem SP16 for Ducks & Public Pheasant
VP80 for Teal & Doves
BPI SG16 & CB100 for Mountain Grouse & Rabbit & Squirrel

I have plenty of Ched 1628 for my lifetime, so I might need a case of VP80 to get me enough Dove loads for my public land hunting for many years to come.

You can get the CSD 16 at Precision preslit (under a different name). What are they thinking?

Yep, talked to Jonathan today. Basically the company that makes PT may not be able to supply them. My interpretation is that they are unreliable. Jonathan made me think it wasn't a BPI "decision" really, just that their supplier can't/won't/isn't supplying them.

He said it was an issue across the PT line. They have a shipment coming in this week, but are not totally sure what PT put in it it sounds like; apparently they don't always get all the types they order, more like what PT decides to run off.

So for the PT2092, a large 420gr 20ga wad, not sure if they will get some of those, but they have asked for them and are hoping. PT2090, a 3/4oz super thick wad (useful for tungsten TSS shot), probably will not ever get more.

He said they were hoping to get more pt1680 (vp80) wads in the future, but they can't say with surety their supplier will be making them.

If you've ever read any of the soap opera that is PT in it's various owner/molds/contracts iterations, you'll see in this one more example of continuing drama and unreliability. You can google up a blog webpage on them if you're interested. It's sickly fascinating, like watching the Jerry Springer show.

I believe they are made in Denmark correct Dave? Now would be a good time for all of us non toxic users shooting the 16 ga's to really hammer down on RSI about making a 16 ga SAM1 wad. I sent an email to the owner but never got a reply. I just received some Rem SP16's and Z16's from Grafs to load up some bismuth for test loads to send off. I was thinking about ordering some of the 16 ga PT's but am glad I did not.

OK thanks for the info. FWIW this I believe the second or third time BPI has claimed they won't carry the VP80/pt1680 wad that can remember, believe it's a wait and see thing.

Anybody that wants Reloading Specialties to make a 16 gauge steel wad, I strongly urge you to call Dr Jon Samuelson,(507) 356-8500, and request he make one. I have spoken with him about it and he will make one if there is enough demand for it. The more phone calls he gets the more he will be inclined to make it

The B&P (CSD) 16 gauge wad as Dave mentioned performed very poorly with steel loads. They seemed to build a lot more pressure with equivalent VP80 wad loads, making me reduce them down quite a bit. I can get 1546 fps from 410 grains of steel with the VP/PT 80 wads, with the B&P(CSD) speeds are around 80 -100 fps less to keep pressures in line. This is from testing of steel loads with the B&P 16 ga wad, they are pretty much destroyed velocity was 1450-1470 fps.

Hey Nick, you bored? Need a project?? Very Happy

I like RSI's 10ga wad, bet they'd make a great 16ga non tox wad.

With a dollop of cautious optimism.....grabbed a bag to compare to VP80 inventory, fingers crossed!

Thanks to everyone who bought cases.

Neither BPI nor Grafs lists them anymore.

All I needed was one bag. :(
