Dave,
Never mastered the posting picture thing. Don't do it enough to remember. I have some Fox's, LC's, Ithaca, Simson, Sauer, AYA, Rizinni all 16's pm me your email will send you pictures. I hunt Grouse a couple times a year in Potter county shot a Gobbler opening day up there this year. My childhood into my 20's was spent hunting at our family camp near Burrow's along the west branch. Now spend most of my time hunting in Northern NY I am from Manheim PA. |

Zoli 16ga,
Thanks much, every once in a great while I get lucky when purchasing. Took a long time to replace this particular J.P. Sauer 16 Gauge Side Lock double gun. Very few of them in this country, especially in this kind condition. I am very grateful to acquire it.

16'er,
Thanks for the complement on the newly acquired J.P. 16, can't wait for Grouse season this year! The gun arrived home today and I had time to take a couple more pictures of her for the Gun Talk forum. Kirby was absolutely correct, an 1800's big time J.P. Sauer 16 Gauge Best Gun. The wood on this Sauer gun is just fantastic, the delicate Breech Work is more like 20 Gauge than a 16, and with the old style Cocking Indicators she is a definite piece of history.

Gentlemen,
I just made a deal on a beautiful 1849 J.P. Sauer Side Lock 16 Gauge Double Bird Gun. This JP Sauer gun has original Krupp 28" Barrels, DT, and incredible French Walnut Stocks. The gun should arrive here at my home in the next week to 10 days.
Pictures on arrival.
These particular 16 gauge J.P. Sauer side Lock double guns are hard to come by today, I was very lucky to acquire it with the restored wood.

Do you really mean 1849 production? Pretty sure hammerless shotgun design, sidelock or boxlock, wasn't really worked out at that time.
But no argument on whether it's a fine gun.....beautiful! |

Canvasback,
I am not exactly sure of the real production date, that should be 1889, nobody really is absolutely sure, I gave the earliest date that I know of. It could have been as late as 1896. However I do believe my Great Grandfathers trips to Germany, according to our family Bible, were in 1849/1850, when he purchase his 16 Gauge Sauer Side Lock bird gun. Unfortunately no catalog of the 1800's era for the Sauer company has ever been recovered, to officially date the Sauer guns by SN. I will however go back and add the 1896 date also.

skeettx,
Unfortunately the pictures come out blurry each time we try making them. It will take a better camera than I own to get a good picture of the proof test markings. I do know this the gun was proof tested for 2 1/2" nitro type shells, due to the chamber length of the Krupp Barrels.
Thanks for the nice comment on my 16 Sauer, should be a great Grouse gun.

Could not miss with that little lass.....late 1896-ish, according to serial number and Krupp barrels.
But, neither the dogs nor the birds will care. |

Tram,
If you have acquired a Krupp book that dates the Krupp Barrel making, please advise where I can purchase one, I would really like to own one.
Further where did you get the SN of the gun, I do not remember posting it.

7th post(?) in this thread had the serial number from the seller's website....along with an estimated age date....ie 1890s according to Mr. Hoyt.
You acknowledged it was the shotgun some 4 posts later....and, the photos appear to confirm it.
No krupp book, sorry.
The Internet reveals much info tho. I would admit that accuracy is not always brick solid but neither is poster info.
There should be a specific german-focused shotgun site with some very knowledgeable folks willing to help nail down a date that might be valuable.
tight lines. |

I interpret the serial numbers to be the beginning numbers for a year, at least those that have the '01' sequence number (doesn't make sense to arbitrarily end years with '01' to me). This has been around for a long time, it's what I've used for guesstimating the dates on old Sauer shotguns. By 1924 the proof date would have been stamped on the barrel flats.
