I need to order wads and saw the 7/8 claybuster. How does it compare to the dr16 in the big hulls? I like the dr16 but for $50 difference I had to ask. |

I like Claybuster for Remington and DR for Federal and Cheddite. |

What OW said. No sense compromising for less than stellar performance. Been there, done that. If you cut your hulls to 2 5/8 or 2 1/2" then the SG16 wad makes a dandy 7/8 oz load in the straight wall hulls. If I were starting over, and I might, that's what I would do.
Regards,

My understanding is the Claybuster 7/8 oz wad is actually more ideal for a one ounce load in straight walled hulls or you need a filler to get a good crimp with 7/8 oz.
The DR16 wads work great for 7/8 oz straight walled hulls with 2.75" hulls, once you get the pre crimp and final crimp stages set properly for this wad.
And, like JNW said, with 2.5" hulls, the SG16 wad is great for 7/8 oz loads.
I've been working with a lot of recipes in 2.5" Cheddite hulls with 7/8 and 15/16 oz loads and getting excellent results.

Looking at a 3/4OZ load from the spred sheet, ref BP. Fiocchi hull and primer, sg-16 wad, 14.0 of clays. Listed info says 1090 fps and 7100 psi I will need to order the wads from BPI but I have all other items here. This looks to be my best choice with the fiocchi hulls I have.
Questions...any reason not to go with the SG-16 wads, will this be a light recoil load? Has anyone made up these loads? if so what wad pressure or seating depth was used to get a proper crimp? I have a Mec 600 jr. press.
I also have some Federal plastic hulls one time fired, purple game load hulls. They also show several loads for that hull. Anyone use this hull? Thanks all SXS Ohio |

That load won't work in a 2 3/4" hull without a LOT of filler , more than likely you will need filler in a 2 1/2" hull .. For any 3/4 oz load the dr-16 is your best bet. But the dr16 & the sg16 are not interchangeable . You will need specific data for each wad.
Hands down the dr wad would be my first choice for 3/4 &7/8oz in a 2 3/4" straight walled hull .

Guess I'll stick with the dr16. I despise the Remington hull compared to just about any of the federal, various cheddites and fiochi hulls. Still have a couple thousand Aa wads for my stash of compression formed hulls |

FN-16GA The load info I listed above does not go into detail, so I thought it was complete? ....some of the loads specify cards and corks but this one does not? I am having trouble getting complete loading data to use that includes all the info needed to make a finished shell...)-: I really want to use Fiocchi hulls as I have un-limited supply and very few of any other brand. Is the Fiocchi a straight wall case? I will need to order wads and any other cards or corks to make up a load ready to shoot but first I need a recipe that will work. I am having trouble finding all the needed info...so I know what items to order. All I have found is just a bunch of in-complete info, I am very confused at best. thanks all SXS Ohio |

Fiocchi 2 3/4 7/8 Clays 16.4 Fio 616 DR16 9,600 1200
Fiocchi 2 3/4 7/8 Clays 16.9 Fio 616 DR16 10,300 1230
Reducing these loads down to 3/4oz should work just fine , of course the velocity will increase |

Mike Campbell, I agree with using the fiocchis, federal sand cheddites as the same hull. I try to stay away from max with easy, middle of the road loads that give some wiggle room. Now if I'm loading hot I want the exact components. |

Thanks Guys....I really don't know my shotshell loading very well...)-: Metallic now that's a different story. This new info will help so much. I plan to order wads today, should I buy any filler cards? They are cheap to add on to my order. Is it true that you buy 20ga cards for 16 hulls? That's a curve ball. I moved my portable Mec press set up to the back porch, fresh air and lots of light. I am almost ready to start some loads....I keep very good and complete records and will also have to pattern test and crono info. I will report info on my best loads.
I am on my way out the door to shoot sporting clays with a new to me Dickinson Estate .410 28" with factory screw chokes. Its my first time out with it...(-: SXS Ohio |

Filler cards are ok, but I like Cheerios (yes, the breakfast fare)
They are frangible and bio-friendly.

Agree! As noted above, the 16ga CB-7/8 oz wad often requires filler. One Cheerio does it with the load I use. Very good reloads in the Herter's hulls. |
