I got to know John a little through these bird hunting forums and we had a few very enjoyable lunches that came along with some 16 gauge shotgun transactions. John was always looking for good 16 gauge shotguns knowing he would pass them on to his family. He was a friendly, engaging, sharp-minded man who could speak well on many topics with the wisdom of someone who has been there.

I got a clear view of John’s character at our little Warrens SxS shoot a number of years ago. John took a hard fall on a graveled path. It was a tough, awkward moment as we and another larger squad stood there stunned for a moment. The other group passed on as we helped John get up. He was pretty bloodied-up on his face and arms, glasses bent. I believe John was about 75 years old at the time. It was a real lesson in dignity watching John shrug it off. At that point we had him ride in a cart, but John insisted on shooting the 100 round course and he did so with one arm. His left shoulder and wrist were hurt pretty bad, but he finished the round and the day of socializing at the clubhouse with nary a mention of his fall. He told me later he had a couple surgeries that summer to get things corrected.

The way John kept active, positive, and engaged in his hobbies and life in general to the end is something to remember and follow. He was quite a guy.

Dave Erickson,

Thanks for the nice account of the incident, no doubt about it John P. Holmes was one seriously big man. As my Father taught me when i was a boy, there are very few real men in this world, your friends are to be other men, lots of little boys in this world. John was a man, he will be missed greatly.
