Does anyone have a point of reference for load data using waxed over powder wads and traditional wad columns in general? I have searched but am having really no luck. I know Precision Reloading's Bismuth manual had some in the back of it but they list so many discontinued powders in that manual. I am putting together some 20/16 ga loads to send off to Armbrust for testing but would still be interested in other load data if only for a better reference point. |

Take a known load with a plastic wad and substitute the plastic wad with the card and fiber of the correct wad colomn height and add 10% more powder. That will get you close.
I assume you know which pellet types you can do this with and which ones you can't. Regardless of pellet type, I am not a fan of non tox pellets of any kind being used without some kind of shot wrapper protecting the pellets from bore scrub. |

Thank you Dogchaser. I make my own bismuth shot so that is what I plan on using. You answered my question about the powder too. Thanks. Any idea as to whether slower or medium burn rate powders work better? I shoot alot of Black Powder SxS so I am used to using all these types of wad column's however I do use leather as the over powder wad. I may try that too and send them off for testing. Thanks for the help. |

Since I am always looking for velocities in the 1250 to 1300 FPS range with 1 1/8 oz. of shot, I like Longshot with Bismuth.
I am sure for 1 oz. 800-X would be a good place to start.
For lighter payloads Unique or Universal should work just fine. |

What is the proper depth for a roll crimp? About 1/4 inch?
Also, does anybody have an idea on what type of wax they used for the traditional wads?
Thanks,
Rob. |

That is a great question, some say beeswax, some say parafin, some use a combination of parafin, beeswax and petroleum jelly.
I have never been able to find out what kind of wax is proper. I always wondered what Federal uses in their paper shells, I have never been able to find out. |

I have looked at an SDS for paper shells and the CAS number for the wax used in the hull construction is paraffin.
I would follow that line of thinking for using paraffin wax in the wads. |
