The Baker didn't pass muster, but someday...someday. However, a pair of Lefevers did find their way to me, one 12 ga. and one 16 ga.
The 16 DS grade really could use a new stock set and some other cosmetic attention but is perfectly functional as is. It will receive that TLC in the future. She is Plain Jane for now and quite petite. My 6 1/2 lb. Fox Sterly now feels like a trap gun. Wow. I foresee a long happy engagement here.
The 12 ga. is an E grade with ejectors and single trigger (both function properly). A real diamond in the rough. That's the good news.
The buttstock is beyond belief though. It is broke on one side and comprised up of four different pieces of wood! Hilarious. The barrel lug that the fore end iron attaches to needs to be reattached itself-a complicated procedure. This may be more common than I thought. I found another barrel set on e-bay that also suffers the same ailment. It is still on e-bay, I have no need of it. Then there is the matter of the hardware store screw and nut. However, I paid next to nothing for it and am eager to perform the necessary tasks to produce another mighty fine companion for long walks on the prairie.
A beautiful slab of black walnut has been squirreled away for just such an occasion. It will produce a pair of english stocks and beavertail fore ends. I knew it would come in handy eventually.

Right on! I always get excited when new projects come up. I love following along in the process. Please post as you progress along. Walnut slab is gorgeous. |

Sweet! Those DS 16's seem to be the lightest of the Syracuse 16's for some reason. Should make a great chukar gun. |

DS 16 is coming along fine. Got her in hunting condition now.
Chambers are now 2 3/4" with long forcing cones. Left barrel is choked .022 (just barely I/M) and right barrel was opened up to .006 (light end of I/C).
A slight sear engagement issue for left barrel sufficed during testing, easy fix though: the shop that sold it had done some work and one screw was not as snug as it should have been. These doubles are especially sensitive to proper stock to metal fit since it determines proper spacing for sear lift by the triggers.
The gun is very light. 26" barrels are a joy. The balance is actually rather light on the muzzle end. A bit of careful hollowing of the butt stock would take care of that and put total weight below 6 lbs. The gun is so lively that I almost hesitate.
A recoil pad has been fitted and I am so eager to use the little Lefever on doves and grouse Saturday! The "pretty work" can wait until later. She is a sweet shooter and new wood can wait for now. |

Sounds perfect! I did a straight grip conversion on a DS16 I had, but for some reason, I just didn't shoot that gun well, so I moved it along. My current wand, a 6lb husky mod. 100 16 hammer gun, is set up the same way, but is the best shooting gun I've owned. Hard to figure out why some guns you hit with, and some you don't. |

Stock fit and MOI are the two major aspects I think have most to do with guns shooting well for us. Trigger has to be at least decent as well. I had a Sterlingworth 16 with lots of drop and shot it well as long as it was pre-mounted. Hit almost nothing otherwise. |

Adopting those shotguns & bringing them back to life is a fine hobby (passion).
Good job! |
