Got out for grouse yesterday with the dogs. The young one managed to put one where I could get a shot. (I was cheating and used a 20ga)
Today, they whipped up a limit of pheasants for me and found them dead in thick cover to boot. God, how I love these days...

Many thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Fourtrax for putting us up, and Steven's amazing dogs. Here is a pic of Steven's bird finding machine Charlie:

Took my friend Russell out yesterday for woodcock with Emma. She put on a stellar performance pointing 7 birds. Russell was able to bring 2 to ground. He was shooting his grandfather's Model 12 16 gauge.

Nice job! I heard about your hunt the last day here, now I see proof that it is true
It was great to see you again, been too long.
Here is what that cover looked like in 2011 when Steve first took me in there.
And Steve on the snowmobile bridge on the way in. He had a little bit more hair back then. Not much but a little

Got to spend 2 one week stretches on the North Shore of Lake Superior this year. It is the part of the year I look forward to all year long. Snowed in today and leave in the morning so guess pretty much over with now.
I bring 3 16 ga. guns with me and only purple shells. As it should be. Have a King Ferry English Ultralight M37 which was unfired, have the box and original paperwork. It is no longer unfired decided to break it in finally. Although the 1949 Field Grade M37 with 26" IC bbl. is still my favorite and most used gun. It makes shots that I shouldn't be able to make.
First day a red, gray and spruce

ColdIron,
The Toller looks like he can't believe you hit them. He looks surprised.
Nice job & nice pix!
I have noticed that I have been getting a near 50 / 50 mix of Red or Grey phase birds this year. Even saw some cinnamon in one of Wingshooters birds. |

LOL Steve sometimes I am not sure who is more surprised when they fall, the dog or me! It really started happening once you sold that 26" IC M37 16 ga. to me, which was what I grew up with. Yeah I noticed the same thing this year, reds are normally hard to come by but about 50-50 this year. And I shot 2 spruce grouse this year normally only one at most every other year. I'm hungry is it 6:30 yet?!
Gil this guy hasn't tolled any grouse yet however the Toller before him who has since crossed the rainbow bridge did on his first grouse. Must be 15 or 16 years ago was hunting back in Tioga County PA. hunting with my FIL and son, 3 generations of us. Dog was 8 months old and hadn't learned to let go of the bottom yet in the water. The 3 of us put a bird up and someone got a pellet in him and it dropped in the middle of a large beaver pond. The dog ran back and forth on the bank and that darned grouse swam right to him. Took awhile grouse are lousy swimmers. Bird got about 15 yards away and the pup couldn't take it anymore and finally jumped in swam to it and delivered it to my hand. Not sure who was shaking more the dog or me. |
