I had an enjoyable armed walk with shots fired today in the woodcock woods. I missed just fine with my 16 ga. Brun-Latrige. Symbolic of our success, are two chicken eggs as I couldn't find a goose egg. Or the two of us laid eggs. Owning a Harris Tweed hat didn't make me shoot like one of the tweeded set. My hunting partner for the day can shoot the lights out, but had this comment about woodock: "They aren't hard to hit, but sure are easy to miss." Truer words not spoken. Wink
Once again, the MuttPak, Abby and Willa, did their job quite well. Gil

Chester's photo might not grace the pages of hunting publications, but he knows his business, and loves his job!

Since we laid an egg week ago last Monday, we had more luck looking in different spots over the past weekend and Monday.
Saturday we bagged four. Only three present for the photo as Floyd lost one bird in the truck which I subsequently found. Jeff’s Uggie 20 and my Brun-Latrige 16. Floyd’s Pop and Sadie led the way.

On this past Sunday, we adventured west of here and had a half dozen flushes, maybe 4 birds, but only bagged one. Ben’s 28 ga. Moracchi O/U. My Abby and Willa escorted us through the rivercane.

On New Year’s Day, Floyd put Pop and Sadie in his diy dog box. Pop and Sadie. Or is it Sadie and Pop? Only the nose knows which nose.

You couldn’t ask for a better premonition of things to come on New Year’s morning. Just before turning off the pavement on to the property, we saw a woodcock standing on the fog line, head bobbing back and forth. Little did we know he was the early warning system and spread the word to the rest of them to clear out. We only found one bird, but lots of splash. This cold weather has them on the run. My Darne R10 20. Gil

Hey all, well these will be the last pictures I post as our upland season ended today. It was an Okay season, the bird numbers were down quite a bit due to a hard winter and drought. Still, we managed to get a few anyway. This year was a far cry from last year as far as weather is concerned. We couldn't hunt the last month of the season last year due to some bad winter storms. This year was much better, a 180 from last.

Yesterday was cold and windy, didn't see many, but I was able to get one.

I used my 12ga Buhag Hubertius (sorry, don't know why the pic is the way it is, can't rotate it for some reason)

Today, the last day, was much better, nice day, not bad winds and the area we hunted produced. I was lucky enough to limit out, my son Jim didn't fair as well. So for me it was a great ending to the season!

I used my Siace 12ga 350G

And the best hunting partners a guy could have, my son Jim and my Raina Dog

I just want to thank the good Lord and St Hubert for another safe and successful year, it's been fun.

Thanks for all those great pictures here on this thread, keep them coming!

Best to all!

Greg

Floyd and Jeff on the edge of the rivercane waiting for Abby’s and Willa’s bells to stop ringing. Cool for down here in the high 20’s at 10 a.m. when we started.

We found a few birds. Snow and palmettos?? Not something we see around here usually. The only thing that might be just as rare are other woodcock hunters. The Ithaca SKB 20 of Floyd’s, my MF Ideal 302 16 ga., and Jeff’s Uggie all have in common factory 25” (+/-) barrels. Gil

Looks like your having some fun Gil. I bet the snow cuts down on the snake sightings. Laughing

I'm usually saying, "Gil your killing us!" about now because we're in deep snow and shut down, but I'm still pheasant hunting with a possible last stab Wednesday in IA. Nonetheless, that sure looks wonderful down there, Gil!

Rick, no snakes, but just as in Florida with iguanas falling out of trees, we came across a sluggish 10" long broadhead skink (lizard) lying in the road as we walked into the bottom. It had to have fallen out of a tree as well. Dave, good that you can still get out up north. Good luck. Gil

NEW AND OLD

Took both my new 2016 and old 1915 straight stock A5's dove hunting on the 30th . I was shooting the old one so well that I use it for 13 of the 15 birds , pick up the new SW16 to kill the last 2 . Made a 101 years apart both shoot great.

Had so much fun with them that I took both guns again this last weekend and killed a limit again . This time about 50/50 on the limit between the guns, made some long shots with new one with and 1 1/8 load of 6's . lotta fun.

Fourtrax, your French Britt's body language seems to be saying "enough of this dead bird porn; can we get back to hunting? Now??" Gil

The brown one is just under two years. He's full of pee & vinegar.
