I have a Hunter Special. It is a shooter not a safe queen and I do enjoy shooting it.
Everything seems to work well, with no glitches except for one thing. When I open the action to load/unload it takes a bit of pressure to hold the action open far enough to have the hulls clear the breechface. The barrels are on face and the action is tight. The lever is about at 5:30. The extractors are free and work correctly.
It feels as though you are holding some pressure against the hammer springs. Is this normal?

probably the same thing the Davis and my LC's do . When the gun is opened , it doesn't free up the cases to remove till you give it a little xtra . It's a great feature for when the group gathers , gun open and shells can't fall out . Same for hunting if you like . However , a PITA when in the heat of shooting and you need to unload and reload as you always have to apply the extra opening pressure .
My 16ga Hunter Special requires the same extra effort as yours and Chuck's, Mark. Never gave it much thought till you posted. I have a couple 16ga Field grade LC Smiths as well. Pretty certain they operate in a similar matter.

it is the cocking lever putting some pressure on the hammer springs. to eliminate that the sears need to be long enough to hold the hammers all the way back. New longer sears can be installed but some doubles just do that. usually to make longer sears will require some forging and hardening and tempering. So a lot of work for not much improvement. I have had some luck re fitting 12 ga sears in 16 and 20ga guns if the 12 ga are actually longer.

The term "shell keeper" is a new one to me but it makes sense. My Winchester 21 in 16ga has that same feature and I like it. No problem when opening and ejecting shells and it only takes a little extra movement when putting new shells into the gun. I wish all my SxS's had that feature.
