Stopped by the local gun dealer today. A couple of 16 ga remmies needed a new home.

Wondering what the "collective" wisdom here can make of these for dates of mfr. etc.
a wingmaster 870 fluted bbl & a remmie model 11 both are pretty clean.

date codes for the 870 are www with a little "stair step" like emblem in front

date codes for the mod 11 are OK

Have you looked at this NRA list?

http://www.nramuseum.com/media/940941/serialization-date%20of%20manufacture.pdf

Looks like the OK would be july for the O and '41 for the K? The first W would be August and WW would be '50?

The old 870 with the ringed forend was fairly light compared with what came later. Great gun. The newer "Express" model 870 can't compare in quality of fit and finish with the old Wingmasters. Those are fine guns you picked up. Gil

In the early years of the Model 870 Wingmaster, the 12-gauge guns came from Ilion with both a normal wood three-shot plug for the magazine tube and the heavy steel "VARI-WEIGHT" plug. The 1950 catalog shows the 12-gauge 870AP "Standard" grade with a weight of 6 3/4 pounds and 7 1/2 pounds with the "VARI-WEIGHT" plug installed.

Researcher,
Will pull the plug (if it has one) on the 16 ga 870 pictured here.

It's wood. I suspected it was as the 870 is quite light & handles like an Ithaca 37 16 ga.

Sorry I lost sight of the fact we were talking 16-gauge guns!! Mia Culpa

A solid ribbed Model 11 16-gauge is a nice find.

Researcher, was the solid rib of the M11 attached by solder or was it machined from the barrel billet as was the rib on the M17? Gil

Both the vent ribs and the solid ribs of the Remington Model 11 and "Sportsman" were milled integral with the barrels, as were the ribs on Models 10, 17, 29, 31 and 32.
