I like the way you think. Now. Give me back my Hyem!

Just one, for a while:

I sold my Ithaca 37 to a gent in PA, if I am not mistaken. Nice guy. My Tobin was also sold. Equally nice guy who has relocated to MN, I think. This Ithaca Nitro Special has been the only 16 for a few seasons. It gets me into the Sweet 16 Shoot, an event that might not actually exist at this point in time. I lucked into about 40 rounds of old Heavi-Shot loads, that make it my non toxic gun, as well. I hunt a few times a year in a non tox area, and this is the gun. It is a little difficult to find an American pistol gripped double that comes in at 6lbs, 2ozs, and I handled other Nitro 16s that are 1/2-3/4lb heavier. This one is just right.
I guess I’m an outlier, but, this one is good enough for the time being, and the foreseeable future.
It really does weigh 6 and very small change:

The little French gun, 5lb 8 oz and sweeter than sweet.
The Belgian hammergun, 29 inch barrels and smooth to swing, not getting enough work in recent years. I need to pattern it, check the POI and maybe have my friend the stockmaker bend it to fit me better. Maybe paper shells and fiber wads will help.
The BUHAG drilling - 16/70x16/70 over 8x57R. The November gun.

Everything is packed up for a move right now, so no shooting for months to come it looks like.

Ted,

I just picked-up a 34 to 35 Fox Sterlingworth from Kenny here in Ohio. Cheap Chinese bathroom scale says 6.6 lbs. 28" barrels, M/F chokes.

Not as nice a condition as my NID but lighter and better between the hands.

Kenny had a little French gun at his shop that was about that weight. Felt really whippy to me. Rolling Eyes

Will take Mr. Sterly out on Wednesday for some Pheasant training with Gunner.

Ditto

Another thought came to me on this topic...For those of us who are not so fortunate to be equally skilled shooters regardless of the gun’s fit, the “need” to have a gun fitted properly dictates that we could actually “need” at least two guns if we shoot in different seasons where the temperatures range from very warm (hot), to very cold (freezing). These extremes impose a range of clothing to be worn which could easily add or take away an inch or more to our ideal LOP. Thus, my ideal duck hunting gun needs to be a shorter stocked gun than the one I’d shoot clays with while wearing t-shirts in the summer. So whatever the shooting is done for, weather conditions might dictate how many are “needed” as well.

Since we shoot 16 gauge the square load gauge we should own 16. 16 Sixteen gauge guns is nice and square plus 16 different guns shoulds cover all the bases. Like 3 Fox's, 2 LC's, a Parker, Model 21, Ithaca NID, Baker, Lefever, AYA, Merkel, Sauer an English gun or 2 and maybe a browning or Remington. 16 seems like the right number.

I want to be in the "always one more" camp, but I have to be realistic My gun cabinet is already full and I am running out of corners to lean them, and my wife reminds me of my collection almost daily.

I got give credit where credit is due skeettx, she's not that into a huge shoe collection. She has a modest amount, but nothing ridiculous. Along those lines its helpful that my hunting buddy loves eat shoes, slippers, socks, underwear and what not.

And I have tried to get her into shotgun collecting, abut unfortunately, she just doesn't like collecting them like I do.

Should the total number include all the 16's I have owned, but foolishly sold or traded away. If that's the case, then there never is enough. Just keep buying them until you own them all.

One thing I’d never sell is a 16! The truth is I regret selling every gun I’ve ever sold, so I decided I’m not selling any of them, even the ones I don’t like. The 16 is my preferred gauge for everything except waterfowl and trap - and while I don’t NEED any more, and I’m extremely happy with what I’ve collected thus far, I would always be open to the idea of getting another if I liked it and the price was right.

That's a very handsome gun, Ted Schefelbein! That weight seems just right to me. I always thought a good Nitro special or Stevens 311 would be just fine, and fairly inexpensive to fiddle into a nice weildy gun for the brush, or anywhere, for that matter. Has your gun had a little "tuning" of triggers and wood? The wood looks nice. Most Nitro Specials seem to have too much drop and not enough length for me. That grip looks like maybe it has been "relaxed" a bit, too. Anyway, thanks for the nice photo -- especially nice image with the leg-o-mutton case and the purple shells. Great case hardening colors on the gun, too.

Cheers!

If you're married it's as many as you can get past your spouse.

In my case I own one and she owns one - I'm safe.
