In answering the question on how many 16’s do you own, it occurred to me as it often does:

How many 16’s do I really need to own, vs want to own?

What is that minimalist ideal battery?

My gut answer is need? One good 6lb gun for upland work.

If I wanted to stretch that, plus a lightweight gun 5 1/2 lbs or less and a heavyweight of 7lbs or more for clays and Waterfowl.

Having said the one to three I have to admit desire has me at six 16’s plus five or so non 16’s which include a superlight 24ga of 5lbs 2oz and a 12ga M21 at 7 1/2lbs for duck. The other three I collected as they made a set with a 16 I already had matching up to it from the same maker and engraver.

The ultimate irony is no matter how many guns I seem to own one gun gets used 80-90% of the time with a variety going out only once or twice a year.

I could get by just with my Ugartechea BLE. It fits, is 6.25 lbs, which is "light enough" to carry and gets the job done for me. I keep chasing the idea of a lighter double, but it really isn't necessary.

I should sell my repeaters, I have never even shot the M1912. I like the 37R, and with the polychoke, it can be a good choice for doves. Although I've only taken it out on doves once. Both my German Guild gun and Belgium O/U are projects that I've never gotten around to getting started.

In reality if I were smart I'd sell a few guns and try to find an exact match for the Uggie as a back up.. But I'm getting kind of hung up on the idea of a Sauer sidelock....

I don’t understand that word in the context of how many 16s do you “need”😁

If you have a spouse you need to remember that half of everything you own is hers/his. If the OP has a spouse and needs three 16ga's, you really have to bump that number up to 6. Now, if you have kids, that is an entirely different calculation. Just saying. Very Happy

I believe the one to three quantity is right for covering any needs, as long as I'm allowed a 12ga for Trap and a 20 for Skeet. 16s to shoot both of those games are available but my opinion is they will generally need reloads if you're shooting in quantity and there are times I just want to pick up some factory shells and go (attempt to) break clays.

It's a long time between bird seasons, and in those interims I find changes in which gun I think I want to carry--complicated further this year by buying a 20ga M37. I'm curious how that "new" fascination looks in 7 or 8 months, this sort of thing has happened before.

If narrowed to one 16, I think my M12 could do it all. So could the Sweet 16 or one of the doubles, anything except maybe the M97 because its only barrel is choked Cyl. Guns that don't get used tend to get sold, one is used exclusively for gunning hunt tests twice a year and I haven't hunted with it for a time despite it being a primary pheasant gun for a good while. You might beware the man with one gun, but sometimes I envy him a little, too.

After many moons, varying between one and a bunch of 16's, I've decided the answer to this question is simply, yes.

Very Happy

I don't need any, but would like to have a Single Shot, Lever and Bolt 16 so I have one of each type, if they all exist.

NEED? None. How many I want is a fluid situation. Mod 31L's, Swt 16's, and any sxs can cause a relapse in my delicate condition. Especially if they are choked cyl-ic.! As far as disorders go, collecting 16's to hunt with is a fairly benign hobby.

Forever tension between enough and too much. I get annoyed if my shooting goes downhill from too much gun switching, and I get bored with too few shotguns.
