WYO . your little fish crows are what started some of the BS back at the NO TOX convention when lead became an issue for Migratory birds . Mexico needed to get something on the docket and the fish crows were their thing . That's why I can only shoot crows here in NY for 7mos and on Fri , Sat , Sun , and Mon only . Would be horrified to shot a fish crow this far North !! NOT !! |

Strangely enough, in the past we would only see the little buggers passing through in mid October, a band of them stretching from horizon to horizon all day long. I used to sit and watch them for hours while tending decoys on slow duck days. We didn't even have a season that allowed us to shoot them, and there was really no opportunity to shoot them other than the two week period when they passed through anyway.
Then about fifteen years ago they took up wintering in the Big Horn Basin. The town of Thermopolis was something like an Alfred Hitchcock scene. Then for some reason they all decided to descend upon Riverton, near where I live. They basically painted the town white. It got so out of hand that the Riverton city council authorized the police force to shotgun them, right in town.
Along came a falconer with a proposal to solve the problem. His four falcons would pick them off of their roosts. The city paid the man $10,000 to get it done. Not long afterwards, two of the falcons died and the man vanished like a fart in the wind, along with the cash.
About the time the crows became known as the "Riverton Air Force" a few guys got really serious about hunting them. They eliminated thousands and thousands of them over the course of four or five years. The entire migration shifted away for a while. The past few years they have been coming back, but not quite in the apocalyptic numbers. A few thousand is about where it peaks and snow cover like we had this year does push a lot of them out. |
