While waiting on the delivery of my Mec 16 gauge press I've been looking at data for 16 gauge loads. Ive decided to go with Fiocchi hulls as I was given 300 or so once fired and a few boxes of 616 primers for free. After looking at Alliant''s website, BPI's 16 gauge manual, and Lyman 5th shotgun handbook, I picked a load form the lyman book that used green dot and an SP16 wad for 1271fps. Well I bought a box of the Fiocchi 16 ga dove loads and shot them through my Stevens 5100 and it was sweet. They are listed at 1165fps. Has anybody been able to duplicate this load? I have green dot, unique, and blue dot on hand... FYI I will be also picking a new 12 ga load as I now see no need for a 1 oz of 1300fps for informal clays.

Try dropping down to 16 grns of Green Dot. You'll like it. SG16 wad would be a better choice IMHO.

Ohio,
What is the advantage of the SG16 over the SP16? Is it the better match of shot cup for the reduced load? I use a lot of SP for Bi field loads but am looking for a light target load.

Better fit for the hull , less chance of powder migration . Sg16 is a great wad for 1 oz loads . 16grs GD in that combination will give you a nice lite target load .

^^^ This^^^ Them Remington wad works best in Remington hulls. In all other true straight walls the SG16 and DR16 are my wads of choice. The SG16 however is a lot cheaper. I would also suggest trying 7/8 oz. instead of 1 oz. for clays and doves with 16 grns of Green Dot. Happens to be my personal favorite. I drop down to 14.2 in Remington hulls.

thanks for the replies guys. Im actually learning a lot about shotgun reloading since I went with the 16. with the 12 gauge i just picked my hull (win AA) and picked one of the MANY loads available. Kinda gotta do a little homework with the 16. It reminds me of whem I first got my 35 Whelen put together.

I enjoy my Whelen

Rem 721 magnum action with a 30-06 bolt, 700 trigger and safety,
Douglas XX Supreme barrel,
factory 700 BDL stock from an 8mm Mag,
700 BDL trigger guard,

I made it, in about 1986.

What a great gun
Mike

Thanks fn16ga & Ohio,

Haven't had powder migration in the AA hulls, but I'm starting to work on other brands. I guess next BPI order will have SG16 added. Now, what about the SG16S?
